2 No human pow'r could conquer death,
Such mischief sin had wrought us.
We were condemned to yield our breath,
To thraldom death had bro't us.
Our enemy both strong and bold,
Had fettered us in days of old

3 But Jesus, God's eternal Son,
The Source of our salvation,
For us the mighty battle won
And saved us from damnation.
Now death on us has lost his claim,

1564 - 1612 Person Name: Hans Leo Hassler, 1564-1612 Hymnal Title: Hymnbook for Christian Worship Harmonizer of "CHRIST LAG IN TODESBANDEN" in Hymnbook for Christian Worship Hans Leo Hassler Germany 1564-1612. Born at Nuremberg, Germany, he came from a family of famous musicians and received early education from his father. He then studied in Venice, Italy, with Andrea Gabrieli, uncle of Giovanni Gabrieli, his friend, with whom he composed a wedding motet. The uncle taught him to play the organ. He learned the polychoral style and took it back to Germany after Andrea Gabrieli's death. He served as organist and composer for Octavian Fugger, the princely art patron of Augsburg (1585-1601). He was a prolific composer but found his influence limited, as he was Protestant in a still heavily Catholic region. In 1602 he became director of town music and organist in the Frauenkirche in Nuremberg until 1608. He married Cordula Claus in 1604. He was finally court musician for the Elector of Saxony in Dresden, Germany, evenually becoming Kapellmeister (1608-1612). A Lutheran, he composed both for Roman Catholic liturgy and for Lutheran churches. He produced two volumns of motets, a famous collection of court songs, and a volume of simpler hymn settings. He published both secular and religious music, managing to compose much for the Catholic church that was also usable in Lutheran settings. He was also a consultant to organ builders. In 1596 he, with 53 other organists, had the opportunity to examine a new instrument with 59 stops at the Schlosskirche, Groningen. He was recognized for his expertise in organ design and often was called on to examine new instruments. He entered the world of mechanical instrument construction, developing a clockwork organ that was later sold to Emperor Rudolf II. He died of tuberculosis in Frankfurt, Germany.

Blix, samt følgende tillæg Magnus Brostrup Landstad (born 7 October 1802 in Måsøy, Norway and died 8 October 1880 in Kristiania) was a Norwegian minister, psalmist and poet who published the first collection of authentic Norwegian traditional ballads in 1853. This work was criticized for unscientific methods, but today it is commonly accepted that he contributed significantly to the preservation of the traditional ballads.
Landstad lived with his father Hans Landstad (1771–1838) who was also a minister, first in 1806 to Øksnes, to Vinje in 1811 and to Seljord in 1819. He took a theological degree (cand. theol) in 1827, and worked after that as the resident chaplain in Gausdal for six years. After that he worked in different parishes in Telemark, Østfold before he became minister of Sandar in Vestfold in 1859. He married Wilhelmine Margrete Marie Lassen, in 1828. He is well known for introducing popular, contemporary Norwegian language into the hymns he wrote, contributing significantly to the spirit of Norwegian romantic nationalism which grew in Norway in this period.
His greatest single achievement was the Landstad Hymnbook (Kirkepsalmebog), which with later revisions was used in Norwegian (bokmål) parishes from 1869 until 1985. The current official church hymnbook contains a lot of his hymns and his translations of foreign hymns.
He was the cousin of Hans Peter Schnitler Krag.
The Landstad-institute, which lies in Seljord, is named after him.
He was a great grandfather of Magny Landstad, also a famous writer.

The SmallChurchMusic site was launched in 2006, growing out of the requests from those struggling
to provide suitable music for their services and meetings. Rev. Clyde McLennan was ordained in mid
1960’s and was a pastor in many small Australian country areas, and therefore was acutely aware of
this music problem. Having also been trained as a Pipe Organist, recordings on site (which are a subset
of the smallchurchmusic.com site) are all actually played by Clyde, and also include piano and piano
with organ versions. All recordings are in MP3 format.
Churches all around the world use the recordings, with downloads averaging over 60,000 per
month.
The recordings normally have an introduction, several verses and a slowdown on the last verse.
Users are encouraged to use software: Audacity (http://www.audacityteam.org) or Song Surgeon (http://songsurgeon.com) (see http://scm-audacity.weebly.com for more information) to adjust the MP3 number of verses, tempo
and pitch to suit their local needs.
