Psalm 22 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.50 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Death and sufferings of Christ; Sufferings and death of Christ First Line: Why has my God my soul forsook Lyrics: Why has my God my soul forsook, Nor will a smile afford? (Thus David once in anguish spoke, And thus our dying Lord.) Though 'tis thy chief delight to dwell Among thy praising saints, Yet thou canst hear a groan as well, And pity our complaints. Our fathers trusted in thy name, And great deliv'rance found; But I'm a worm, despised of men, And trodden to the ground. Shaking the head, they pass me by, And laugh my soul to scorn; "In vain he trusts in God," they cry,. "Neglected and forlorn." But thou art he who formed my flesh By thine almighty word; And since I hung upon the breast, My hope is in the Lord. Why will my Father hide his face, When foes stand threat'ning round, In the dark hour of deep distress, And not a helper found? Behold thy darling left among The cruel and the proud, As bulls of Bashan, fierce and strong, As lions roaring loud. From earth and hell my sorrows meet To multiply the smart; They nail my hands, they pierce my feet, And try to vex my heart. Yet if thy sovereign hand let loose The rage of earth and hell, Why will my heav'nly Father bruise The Son he loves so well? My God, if possible it be, Withhold this bitter cup But I resign my will to thee, And drink the sorrows up. My heart dissolves with pangs unknown, In groans I waste my breath; Thy heavy hand has brought me down Low as the dust of death. Father, I give my spirit up, And trust it in thy hand; My dying flesh shall rest in hope, And rise at thy command. Scripture: Psalm 22:1-16 Languages: English

Psalm 22 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.51 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Death and sufferings of Christ; Sufferings and death of Christ First Line: Now from the roaring lion's rage Lyrics: "Now from the roaring lion's rage, O Lord, protect thy Son, Nor leave thy darling to engage The powers of hell alone." Thus did our suff'ring Savior pray, With mighty cries and tears; God heard him in that dreadful day, And chased away his fears. Great was the vict'ry of his death, His throne exalted high; And all the kindreds of the earth Shall worship or shall die. A num'rous offspring must arise From his expiring groans; They shall be reckoned in his eyes For daughters and for sons. The meek and humble souls shall see His table richly spread; And all that seek the Lord shall be With joys immortal fed. The isles shall know the righteousness Of our incarnate God, And nations yet unborn profess Salvation in his blood. Scripture: Psalm 22:20-21 Languages: English

To God, the only wise

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #186 (1835) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Death and sufferings of Christ; Sufferings and death of Christ Lyrics: To God the only wise, Our Savior and our King, Let all the saints below the skies Their humble praises bring. 'Tis his almighty love, His counsel, and' his care, Preserves us safe from sin and death, And every hurtful snare. He will present our souls, Unblemished and complete, Before the glory of his face, With joys divinely great. Then all the chosen seed Shall meet around the throne, Shall bless the conduct of his grace, And make his wonders known. To our Redeemer, God, Wisdom and power belongs, Immortal crowns of majesty, And everlasting songs. Scripture: Jude 24-25 Languages: English

Psalm 22

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.52 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Death and sufferings of Christ; Sufferings and death of Christ First Line: Now let our mournful songs record Lyrics: Now let our mournful songs record The dying sorrows of our Lord, When he complained in tears and blood, As one forsaken of his God. The Jews beheld him thus forlorn, And shake their heads, and laugh in scorn: "He rescued others from the grave; Now let him try himself to save. "This is the man did once pretend God was his Father and his Friend; If God, the blessed, loved him so, Why doth he fail to help him now?" Barbarous people! cruel priests! How they stood round like savage beasts! Like lions gaping to devour, When God had left him in their power. They wound his head, his hands, his feet, Till streams of blood each other meet; By lot his garments they divide, And mock the pangs in which he died. But God, his Father, heard his cry; Raised from the dead, he reigns on high, The nations learn his righteousness, And humble sinners taste his grace. Scripture: Psalm 22:1 Languages: English

Now be the God of Israel bless'd

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #520 (1835) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Death and sufferings of Christ; Sufferings and death of Christ Lyrics: Now be the God of Isr'el blessed, Who makes his truth appear; His mighty hand fulfils his word, And all the oaths he sware. Now he bedews old David's root With blessings from the skies; He makes the Branch of Promise grow, The promised Horn arise. [John wns the prophet of the Lord, To go before his face; The herald which our Savior God Sent to prepare his ways. He makes the great salvation known, He speaks of pardoned sins; While grace divine, and heav'nly love, In its own glory shines. "Behold the Lamb of God," he cnes. "That takes our guilt away; I saw the Spirit o'er his head, On his baptizing day.] "Be every vale exalted high, Sink every mountain low; The proud must stoop, and humble souls Shall his salvation know. "The heathen realms with Isr'el's land Shall join in sweet accord And all that's born of man shall see The glory of the Lord. "Behold the Morning Star arise, Ye that in darkness sit; He marks the path that leads to peace, And guides our doubtful feet." Scripture: Luke 1:68 Languages: English

'Twas the commission of the Lord

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #525 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Death and sufferings of Christ; Sufferings and death of Christ Lyrics: 'Twas the commission of our Lord, "Go teach the nations, and baptize:" The nations have received the word Since he ascended to the skies. He sits upon th' eternal hills, With grace and pardon in his hands; And sends his cov'nant with the seals, To bless the distant British lands. "Repent, and be baptized," he saith, For the remission of your sins:" And thus our sense assists our faith, And shows us what his gospel means. Our souls he washes in his blood, As water makes the body clean; And the good Spirit from our God Descends like purifying rain. Thus we engage ourselves to thee, And seal our cov'nant with the Lord; O may the great eternal Three In heav'n our solemn vows record! Scripture: Matthew 28:19 Languages: English

Behold the man

Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns #CXXXVI (1792) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: The Sufferings and Death of Christ First Line: Ye that pass by, behold the man Lyrics: 1 Ye that pass by, behold the man, The man of grief condemn'd for you, The Lamb of God for sinners slain, Weeping to Calvary pursue. 2 His sacred limbs they stretch, they tear, With nails they fasten to the wood— His sacred limbs— expos'd and bare, Or only cover'd with his blood. 3 See there! his temples crown'd with thorns, His bleeding hands extended wide, His streaming feet transfix'd and torn, The fountain gushing from his side. 4 Thou dear, thou suffering Son of God, How doth thy heart to sinners move! Sprinkle on us thy precious blood, And melt us with thy dying love! 5 The earth could to her centre quake, Convuls'd when her Creator died; O may our inmost nature shake, And bow with Jesus crucified! 6 At thy last gasp the graves display'd Their horrors to the upper skies; O that our souls might burst the shade, And, quicken'd by thy death, arise! 7 The rocks could feel thy powerful death, And tremble, and asunder part; O rend, with thy expiring breath, The harder marble of our heart.
