Afflicted Saints happy, and prosperous Sinners cursed

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #127 (1786) Topics: Afflicted Saints happy; Afflicted Saints happy First Line: Now I'm convinc'd, the Lord is kind Lyrics: 1 Now I’m convinc'd, the Lord is kind To men of heart sincere, Yet once my foolish thoughts repin'd, And border'd on despair. 2 I griev'd to see the wicked thrive, And spoke with angry breath, “How pleasant and profane they live! "How peaceful is their death! 3 "With well fed flesh and haughty eyes "They lay their fears to sleep; "Against the heavens their slanders rise, "While saints in silence weep. 4 "In vain I lift my hands to pray, "And cleanse my heart in vain; "For I am chastened all the day, "The night renews my pain." 5 Yet while my tongue indulg'd complaints, I felt my heart reprove; "Sure I shall thus offend thy saints, "And grieve the men I love." 6 But still I found my doubts too hard, The conflict too severe; 'Till I retir'd to search thy word, And learn thy secrets there. 7 There, as in some prophetic glass, I saw the sinner’s feet High mounted on a slippery place, Beside a fiery pit. 8 I heard the wretch profanely boast, 'Till at thy frown he fell; His honours in a dream were lost, And he awakes in hell. 9 Lord what an envious fool I was! How like a thoughtless beast! Thus to suspect thy promis'd grace, And think the wicked blest. 10 Yet I was kept from full despair, Upheld by power unknown: That blessed hand that broke the snare, Shall guide me to thy throne. Saints chastised, and Sinners destroyed; or Instructive Affilctions

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #165a (1786) Topics: Afflicted Saints happy; Afflicted Saints happy First Line: O God! to whom revenge belongs Lyrics: 1 O God! to whom revenge belongs, Proclaim thy wrath aloud; Let sovereign power redress our wrongs, Let justice smite the proud. 2 They say, "The Lord nor sees nor hears;" When will the vain be wise? Can he be deaf, who form'd their ears? Or blind, who made their eyes? 3 He knows their impious thoughts are vain, And they shall feel his power; His wrath shall pierce their souls with pain In some surprising hour. 4 But if thy saints deserve rebuke, Thou hast a gentler rod; Thy providence, thy sacred book Shall make them know their God. 5 Blest is the man thy hands chastise, And to his duty draw; Thy scourges make thy children wise When they forget thy law. 6 But God will ne’er cast off his saints, Nor his own promise break; He pardons his inheritance For their Redeemer’s sake. God our Support and Comfort; or Deliverance from Temptation and Persecution

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's imitation of the Psalms of David, to which is added a collection of hymns; the whole applied to the state of the Christian Church in general (3rd ed.) #165b (1786) Topics: Afflicted Saints happy; Afflicted Saints happy First Line: Who will arise and plead my right Lyrics: 1 Who will arise and plead my right Against my numerous foes? While earth and hell their force unite, And all my hopes oppose. 2 Had not the Lord, my rock, my help, Sustain'd my fainting head. My life had now in silence dwelt, My soul amongst the dead. 3 Alas! my sliding feet! I cry'd, Thy promise bore me up Thy grace stood constant by my side, And rais'd my sinking hope. 4 While multitudes of mournful thoughts Within my bosom roll, Thy boundless love forgives my faults, Thy comforts cheer my soul. 5 Powers of iniquity may rise, And frame pernicious laws; But God my refuge rules the skies, He will defend my cause. 6 Let malice vent her rage aloud, Let bold blasphemers scoff; The Lord our God shall judge the proud, And cut the sinners off.
