O praise ye the Lord

Hymnal: A New Version of the Psalms of David #CXLIX (1760) Lyrics: 1, 2 O Praise ye the Lord, prepare your glad Voice. His Praise in the great Assembly to sing. In our great Creator, let Isr'el rejoice; And Children of Sion be glad in their King. 3, 4 Let them his great Name extol in the Dance; With Timbrel and Harp, his Praises express, Who always takes Pleasure his Saints to advance; And with his Salvation the humble to bless. 5, 6 With Glory adorn'd, his People shall sing To God, who their Beds with Safety does shield; Their Mouths fill'd with Praises of Him their great King; Whilst a two-edged Sword their right Hand shall wield. 7, 8 Just Vengeance to take for Injuries past; And punish those Lands for Ruin design'd; With Chains, as their Captives, to tie their Kings fast, With Fetters of Iron their Nobles to bind. 9 Thus shall they make good. when them they destroy, The dreadful Decree which God does proclaim: Such Honour, and Triumph his Saints shall enjoy. O therefore forever exalt his great Name! Scripture: Psalm 149 Languages: English

Anonymous

Person Name: Anon. Author of "O praise ye the Lord! prepare your glad voice" in The Psalmody In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

J. H. Fillmore

1849 - 1936 Composer of "PREPARE YOUR GLAD VOICE" in Bible Songs James Henry Fillmore USA 1849-1936. Born at Cincinnati, OH, he helped support his family by running his father's singing school. He married Annie Eliza McKrell in 1880, and they had five children. After his father's death he and his brothers, Charles and Frederick, founded the Fillmore Brothers Music House in Cincinnati, specializing in publishing religious music. He was also an author, composer, and editor of music, composing hymn tunes, anthems, and cantatas, as well as publishing 20+ Christian songbooks and hymnals. He issued a monthly periodical “The music messsenger”, typically putting in his own hymns before publishing them in hymnbooks. Jessie Brown Pounds, also a hymnist, contributed song lyrics to the Fillmore Music House for 30 years, and many tunes were composed for her lyrics. He was instrumental in the prohibition and temperance efforts of the day. His wife died in 1913, and he took a world tour trip with single daughter, Fred (a church singer), in the early 1920s. He died in Cincinnati. His son, Henry, became a bandmaster/composer. John Perry

Joseph Haydn

1732 - 1809 Person Name: F. J. Haydn Composer of "[O praise ye the Lord! prepare your glad voice]" in Bible Songs Franz Joseph Haydn (b. Rohrau, Austria, 1732; d. Vienna, Austria, 1809) Haydn's life was relatively uneventful, but his artistic legacy was truly astounding. He began his musical career as a choirboy in St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, spent some years in that city making a precarious living as a music teacher and composer, and then served as music director for the Esterhazy family from 1761 to 1790. Haydn became a most productive and widely respected composer of symphonies, chamber music, and piano sonatas. In his retirement years he took two extended tours to England, which resulted in his "London" symphonies and (because of G. F. Handel's influence) in oratorios. Haydn's church music includes six great Masses and a few original hymn tunes. Hymnal editors have also arranged hymn tunes from various themes in Haydn's music. Bert Polman
