We bring you, Lord, our prayer and praise

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #571b (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 We bring you, Lord, our prayer and praise that every child of earth should live and grow in freedom's ways, in dignity and worth. 2 We praise for such a task begun to serve each other's need, for every cause of justice won, for every fetter freed. 3 Our prayers are for a world in pain where force and fear prevail, the plough becomes the sword again, and hope and harvests fail. 4 Alike our prayer and praise express the wants of humankind, that those in bondage and distress their larger freedoms find. 5 So may we still maintain the fight till earth's oppressions cease before the universal right to liberty and peace. 6 In Christ we learn to love and care and spread his truth abroad; and in his Name we lift our prayer: 'Your kingdom come, O Lord.' Young people all, attention give

Hymnal: The Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion (New ed. thoroughly rev. and much enl.) #1 (1854) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1. Young people all, attention give, And hear what I shall say; I wish your souls with Christ to live, In everlasting day. Remember you are hast'ning on To death's dark, gloomy shade; Your joys on earth will soon be gone, Your flesh in dust be laid. 2. Death's iron gate you must pass through, Ere long, my dear young friends; With whom then do you think to go, With saints or fiery fiends? Pray meditate before too late, While in a gospel land, Behold King Jesus at the gate, Most lovingly doth stand. 3. Young men, how can you turn your face From such a glorious friend; Will you pursue your dangerous ways? O don't you fear the end? Will you pursue that dangerous road Which leads to death and hell? Will you refuse all peace with God, With devils for to dwell? 4. Young women too, what will you do, If out of Christ you die? From all God's people you must go, To weep, lament, and cry: Where you the least relief can't find, To mitigate your pain; Your good things all be left behind, Your souls in death remain. 5. Young people all, I pray then view The fountain opened wide; The spring of life opened for sin, Which flowed from Jesus' side; There you may drink in endless joy, And reign with Christ your king, In his glad notes your souls employ, And hallelujahs sing. A Long, Long Way the Sea-Winds Blow

Author: William Stanley Braithwaite, 1878-1962 Hymnal: Singing the Living Tradition #351 (1993) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 A long, long way the sea-winds blow across the sea-plains blue, but longer far my heart must go before its dreams come true. 2 And work we must, and love we must, and do the best we may, and take the hope of dreams in trust to keep us day by day. 3 A long, long way the sea-winds blow — but somewhere lies a shore — thus down the tide of time shall flow my dreams forever more. O for a Closer Walk with God

Author: William Cowper Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #437 (1985) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 O for a closer walk with God, a calm and heav'nly frame, a light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb. 2 Return, O Holy Dove, return, sweet messenger of rest; I hate the sins that made thee mourn and drove thee from my breast. 3 The dearest idol I have known, whate'er that idol be, help me to tear it from thy throne and worship only thee. 4 So shall my walk be close with God, calm and serene my frame, so purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb. O God, defender of the poor

Author: Christopher Idle, 1938- Hymnal: The Book of Praise #3 (1997) Lyrics: 1 O God, defender of the poor, have mercy when I pray: you listened to my prayer before– LORD, hear my prayer today! 2 How long will people choose vain things, love empty words and wrong? They scorn to serve the King of kings– O living God, how long? 3 The saints, O LORD, you set apart by grace to be your own: let sinners tremble, search their hearts and bow before your throne. 4 While many pray that you will bless and bring them all they need, unless they long for holiness, their prayers are vain indeed. 5 Your light, O Lord, let us receive; your face within us shine, for richer is the joy you give than all their grain and wine. 6 And even when I turn to sleep your blessings still increase, for you alone, O Lord, will keep your child in perfect peace.
