Lord, Hear the Voice of My Complaint

Author: J. Agricola, 1494-1566 ; C. Winkworth, 1827-78 Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary #255 (1996) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7.4.6.8 Hymnal Title: Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary Lyrics: 1 Lord, hear the voice of my complaint, To Thee I now commend me, Let not my heart and hope grow faint, But deign Thy grace to send me. True faith from Thee, my God, I seek, The faith that loves Thee solely, Keeps me lowly, And prompt to aid the weak, And mark each word that Thou dost speak. 2 Yet more from Thee I dare to claim, Whose goodness is unbounded; Oh let me ne'er be put to shame, My hope be ne'er confounded; But e'en in death still find Thee true, And in that hour, else lonely, Trust Thee only, Not aught that I can do, For such false trust I sore should rue. 3 Oh grant that from my very heart My foes be all forgiven, Forgive my sins and heal their smart, And grant new life from heaven. Thy Word, that blessed food, bestow, Which best the soul canst nourish; Make it flourish Through all the storms of woe That else my faith might overthrow. 4 Then be the world my foe or friend, Keep me to her a stranger, Thy steadfast soldier to the end, Through pleasure and through danger. From Thee alone comes such high grace, No works of ours obtain it, Or can gain it; Our pride hath here no place, 'Tis Thy free promise we embrace. 5 Help me, for I am weak; I fight, Yet scarce can battle longer. I cling but to Thy grace and might, 'Tis Thou must make me stronger. When sore temptations are my lot, And tempests round me lower, Break their power; So, through deliv'rance wrought, I know that Thou forsak'st me not! Oh, Joy of Joys! God so Did Love

Author: Israel Kolmodin, 1643-1709 Hymnal: Hymnal and Order of Service #268a (1901) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7.5.6.7 Hymnal Title: Hymnal and Order of Service Lyrics: 1 Oh, joy of joys! God so did love This world and show compassion, That He sent down from heaven above His Son for our salvation. So deep in sin this world was bound, Had God His Son not given, Our bonds thus riven, No help had e'er been found, However man had striven. 2 This doth our hearts now satisfy, And quiets all our terrors, That Jesus Christ our Lord did die To save us from our errors. O God, Thy love to us is great! Thy mercies are most tender! Our sole defender, None in this earthly state Thee ample praise can render. 3 He who on Jesus Christ doth trust Shall happy be in heaven; The happiness which once was lost through Jesus Christ is given. For God His Son did never send Here for our condemnation: His incarnation Had for its gracious end Our joy and our salvation. 4 But all who turn from Christ away Shall be condemned forever: Their doom is sealed this very day, And death awaits the ever. For since they willfully refused Salvation to inherit Through Jesus' merit, They stand of sin accused, And so must suffer for it. 5 All who are faithful unto death Are given life forever, The life which is the fruit of faith In Jesus Christ our Saviour. Give us, O Lord, the faith to come And ever cling to Jesus! When death releases Our souls, oh, take them home, To dwell in heavenly places. To Thee, O Lord, I send my Cries

Hymnal: Psalmodia Germanica #114 (1732) Hymnal Title: Psalmodia Germanica Lyrics: I. To Thee, O Lord, I send my Cries: O! let them rise to heaven. And let to all my Pray'rs and Sighs A gracious Ear be given. O! make thy Word my firm Support: And grant me Faith so saving, That I, having A clean'sd and humble Heart, May all thy Statutes live in. II. And Oh, I pray Thee, O my God, Oh! give me no Denial, Destroy not with thy wrathful Rod Me in the fiery Tryal. Give living Hope when I go hence, And, with all Resignation, Destestation Of all Self-Confidence Concerning my Salvation. III. Grant me a good forgiving Mind To All that Evil bring me: Cast all my num'rous Sins behind; Renew thy Life within me. Thy Word be my continual food To keep my Soul from starving, And from starting From Thee when SATAN'S Brood My Ruin is concerting. IV. Let neither Lust nor Fear prevail To draw me from my Duty: By aiding Grace I shall not fail To walk in Faith and Beauty. For who has ought but what thou giv'st? Thy Favour none can merit; But thy Spirit, By whom thou all reliev'st, Can graciously confer it. V. I fight, Lord JESUS! and withstand, But, oh, in slipry Places; Support me with thy mighty Hand, And thine abundant Graces. When Sin and SATAN raise their Force, Let me not be affrighted, But delighted To run my Christian Course, 'Till I'm with Thee united.
