For all the saints, who from their labors rest

Author: William Walsham How, 1823-1897 Hymnal: EH1982 #287 (1985) Meter: 10.10.10 with alleluias Lyrics: 1. For all the saints, who from their labors rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy Name, O Jesus, be for ever blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia! 2. Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might: thou, Lord, their Captain in the well-fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, the one true Light. Alleluia, Alleluia! 3. O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, and win, with them, the victor's crown of gold. Alleluia, Alleluia! 4. O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia, Alleluia! 5. And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia! 6. The golden evening brightens in the west; soon, soon to faithful warriors cometh rest; sweet is the calm of paradise the blest. Alleluia, Alleluia! 7. But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia, Alleluia! 8. From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost: Alleluia, Alleluia! When in our music God is glorified

Author: F. Pratt Green, b. 1903 Hymnal: EH1982 #420 (1985) Meter: 10.10.10 with alleluias Lyrics: 1 When in our music God is glorified, and adoration leaves no room for pride, it is as though the whole creation cried Alleluia! 2 How often, making music, we have found a new dimension in the world of sound, as worship moved us to a more profound Alleluia! 3 So has the Church, in liturgy and song, in faith and love, through centuries of wrong, borne witness to the truth in every tongue, Alleluia! 4 And did not Jesus sing a psalm that night when utmost evil strove against the Light? Then let us sing, for whom he won the fight, Alleluia! 5 Let every instrument be tuned for praise! Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise! And may God give us faith to sing always Alleluia! Amen. Christians, awake, salute the happy morn

Author: John Byrom, 1692-1763 Hymnal: EH1982 #106 (1985) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Lyrics: 1. Christians, awake, salute the happy morn whereon the Savior of the world was born; rise to adore the mystery of love, which hosts of angels chanted from above; with them the joyful tidings first begun of God Incarnate and the Virgin's Son. 2. Then to the watchful shepherds it was told, who heard the angelic herald's voice: "Behold, I bring good tidings of a Savior's birth to you and all the nations on the earth: this day hath God fulfilled his promised word, this day is born a Savior, Christ the Lord." 3. He spoke, and straightway the celestial choir in hymns of joy, unknown before, conspire; the praises of redeeming love they sang, and heaven's whole orb with alleluias rang; God's highest glory was their anthem still, peace on the earth, and unto men good will. 4. In Bethlehem the happy shepherds sought to see the wonder God for us had wrought, and found, with Joseph and the blessed maid, her Son, the Savior, in a manger laid; amazed, the wondrous story they proclaim, the earliest heralds of the Savior's name. 5. Let us, like these good shepherds, then employ our grateful voices to proclaim the joy; trace we the Babe, who hath retrieved our loss, from his poor manger to his bitter cross; treading his steps, assisted by his grace, till our first heavenly state again takes place. 6. Then may we hope, the angelic thrones among, to sing, redeemed, a glad triumphal song; he that was born upon this joyful day around us all his glory shall display; saved by his love, incessant we shall sing eternal praise to heaven's almighty King. Thou, who at thy first Eucharist didst pray

Author: William Harry Turton, 1856-1938 Hymnal: EH1982 #315 (1985) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Lyrics: 1. Thou, who at thy first Eucharist didst pray that all thy Church might be for ever one, grant us at every Eucharist to say with longing heart and soul, "Thy will be done." O may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity. 2. For all thy Church, O Lord, we intercede; make thou our sad divisions soon to cease; draw us the nearer each to each, we plead, by drawing all to thee, O Prince of Peace; thus may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity. 3. So, Lord, at length when sacraments shall cease, may we be one with all thy Church above, one with thy saints in one unbroken peace, one with thy saints in one unbounded love; more blessed still, in peace and love to be one with the Trinity in Unity. And now, O Father, mindful of the love

Author: William Bright, 1824-1901 Hymnal: EH1982 #337 (1985) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Lyrics: 1 And now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calvary's tree, and having with us him that pleads above, we here present, we here spread forth to thee, that only offering perfect in thine eyes, the one true, pure, immortal sacrifice. 2 Look Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim: for lo! between our sins and their reward, we set the passion of thy Son our Lord. 3 And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing presence we appeal; O fold them closer to thy mercy's breast! O do thine utmost for their souls' true weal! From tainting mischief keep them pure and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere. 4 And so we come; O draw us to thy feet, most patient Savior, who canst love us still! And by this food, so awesome and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill: in thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us nevermore to part from thee.
