A city radiant as a bride

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 Hymnal: CPAM2000 #364 (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 A city radiant as a bride and bright with gold and gem, a crystal river clear and wide, the new Jerusalem; a city wrought of wealth untold, her jewelled walls aflame with green and amethyst and gold and colours one can name. 2 A holy city, clear as glass, where saints in glory dwell; through gates of pearl her people pass to fields of asphodel. In robes of splendour, pure and white, they walk the golden floor, where God himself shall be their light and night shall be no more. 3 A city ever new and fair, the Lamb's eternal bride; no suffering or grief is there and every tear is dried. There Christ prepares for us a place, from sin and death restored, and we shall stand before his face, the ransomed of the Lord. Topics: The City; Saints; Funerals, Commemoration, Remembrance and All Souls Scripture: Isaiah 35:2 Languages: English Tune Title: LADYWELL

A safe stronghold our God is still

Author: Martin Luther, 1483-1546; Thomas Carlyle, 1795-1881 Hymnal: CPAM2000 #366 (2000) Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 Lyrics: 1 A safe stronghold our God is still, a trusty shield and weapon; he'll keep us clear from all the ill that hath us now o'ertaken. The ancient prince of hell hath risen with purpose fell; strong mail of craft and power he weareth in this hour; on earth is not his fellow. 2 With force of arms we nothing can, full soon were we down-ridden; but for us fights the proper man, whom God himself hath bidden. Ask ye, 'Who is this same?' Christ Jesus is his name, the Lord Sabaoth's Son; he, and no other one, shall conquer in the battle. *3 And were this world all devils o'er, and watching to devour us, we lay it not to heart so sore; not they can overpower us. And let the prince of ill look grim as e'er he will, he harms us not a whit; for why? His doom is writ; a word shall quickly slay him. 4 God's word, for all their craft and force, one moment will not linger, but, spite of hell, shall have its course; 'tis written by his finger. And though they take our life, goods, honour, children, wife, yet is their profit small; these things shall vanish all: the City of God remaineth. Abide with me: fast falls the eventide

Author: H. F. Lyte, 1793-1847 Hymnal: CPAM2000 #10 (2000) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Lyrics: 1 Abide with me; fast falls the eventide: the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide! when other helpers fail, and comforts flee, help of the helpless, O abide with me. 2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away; change and decay in all around I see; O thou who changest not, abide with me. 3 I need thy presence every passing hour; what but thy grace can foil the tempter's power? who like thyself my guide and stay can be? through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me. 4 I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if thou abide with me. 5 Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes; shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies: Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee; in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me! Topics: Evening; Funerals, Commemoration, Remembrance and All Souls Scripture: 1 Chronicles 29:15 Languages: English Tune Title: EVENTIDE

According to thy gracious word

Author: James Montgomery, 1771-1854 Hymnal: CPAM2000 #276a (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 According to thy gracious word in meek humility, this will I do, my dying Lord, I will remember thee. 2 Thy body, broken for my sake, my bread from heaven shall be; thy cup of blessing I will take, and thus remember thee. 3 Can I Gethsemane forget or there thy conflict see, thine agony and bloody sweat, and not remember thee? 4 When to the cross I turn mine eyes, and rest on Calvary, O Lamb of God, my sacrifice, I must remember thee: 5 Remember thee, and all thy pains, and all thy love to me; yea, while a breath, a pulse remains, will I remember thee. 6 And when these failing lips grow dumb, and mind and memory flee, when thou shalt in thy kingdom come, then, Lord, remember me. Topics: Holy Communion Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 Languages: English Tune Title: BANGOR
