Lord, Teach Us How to Pray Aright

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 222 hymnals Scripture: Luke 11:1 Lyrics: 1 Lord, teach us how to pray aright with rev'rence and with fear; though weak and sinful in thy sight, we may, we must draw near. 2 We perish if we cease from prayer: O grant us power to pray; and when to meet thee we prepare, Lord, meet us by the way. 3 Give deep humility, the sense of godly sorrow give; a strong dsiring confidence to hear thy voice and live; 4 faith in the only sacrifice that can for sin atone, to cast our hopes, to fix our eyes on Christ, and Christ alone: 5 patience to watch, and wait, and weep though mercy long delay; courage, our fainting souls to keep and trust thee though thou slay: 6 give these--and then thy will be done; thus, strengthened with all might, we by thy Spirit and thy Son, shall pray, and pray aright. Spirit of God, Who Dwells within My Heart

Author: George Croly Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 338 hymnals Scripture: Luke 11:13 Lyrics: 1 Spirit of God, who dwells within my heart, wean it from sin, through all its pulses move. Stoop to my weakness, mighty as you are, and make me love you as I ought to love. 2 I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies, no sudden rending of the veil of clay, no angel visitant, no opening skies; but take the dimness of my soul away. 3 Did you not bid us love you, God and King, love you with all our heart and strength and mind? I see the cross– there teach my heart to cling. O let me seek you and O let me find! 4 Teach me to feel that you are always nigh; teach me the struggles of the soul to bear, to check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh; teach me the patience of unceasing prayer. 5 Teach me to love you as your angels love, one holy passion filling all my frame: the fullness of the heaven-descended Dove; my heart an altar, and your love the flame. Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts

Author: Ray Palmer (1808-1887) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 551 hymnals Scripture: Luke 11:9 Lyrics: 1 Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts, thou light of life, thou fount of grace: from the best bliss that earth imparts we turn unfilled to seek thy face. 2 Thy truth unchanged has ever stood; thou savest those that on thee call: to those that seek thee thou art good, to those that find thee, all in all. 3 We taste thee, O thou living bread, and long to feast upon thee still; we drink of thee, the fountain-head, and thirst our souls from thee to fill. 4 Our restless spirits yearn for thee, where'er our changeful lot is cast, glad when thy gracious smile we see, blest when our faith can hold thee fast. 5 O Jesus, ever with us stay; make all our moments calm and bright; chase the dark night of sin away; shed o'er the world thy holy light.
