Phoebe Palmer Knapp

1839 - 1908 Person Name: Mrs. J. F. Knapp Composer of "[He has come! He has come! my Redeemer has come]" in Songs of Full Salvation As a young girl Phoebe Palmer Knapp (b. New York, NY, 1839; d. Poland Springs, ME, 1908) displayed great musical talent; she composed and sang children’s song at an early age. The daughter of the Methodist evangelist Walter C. Palmer, she was married to John Fairfield Knapp at the age of sixteen. Her husband was a founder of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and after his death, she shared her considerable inherited wealth with various charitable organizations. She composed over five hundred gospel songs, of which the tunes for “Blessed Assurance” and “Open the Gates of the Temple” are still popular today. Bert Polman

1835 - 1929 Person Name: Mrs J. H Knowles Author of "He Has Come" in Crowning Glory No. 2 Ellin J. Toy Knowles [Mrs. Joseph H. Knowles] The 1903 History of the Newark Female Charitable Society said Knowles’ was from New York City when she addressed the Society in 1886; it also says she was president of the Society in 1893. The 1906 Minutes of the Newark Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church listed Knowles as a minister’s widow. Her works include: Spirit and Life; Selections from Bible Readings, 1899 Heart Talks on Bible Themes (Fleming H.
