The faithful servants of the Lord

Meter: Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: 2 Corinthians 12:1-9 Lyrics: 1 The faithful servants of the Lord, Who teach the plain and simple word Are always tempted, always tried, Distress'd and vext on ev'ry side. 2 Such was the first Apostl's fate, As sacred writings do relate; And all their faithful partners meet, The like reward and equal treat. 3 Oftimes they are falsely accus'd, And therefore slander'd and abus'd; When they endeavour to discharge, Their office to the world at large. 4 The Gospel is the purest light, It brings the sacred truth to sight; But where the truth, its beauty shows, There Satan's Kingdom will oppose. 5 The Servants of the Saviour are Expos'd to danger, dread and fear; Continual conflicts, war and strife Attends the course of all their life. 6 Expos'd to wants of ev'ry kind, Distress'd in body and in mind-- Esteem'd as men of meanest worth, As the off-scourings of the earth. 7 Oftimes as Pilgrim's, here they roam, No certain stay, or Place of home; The chief reward they hope to have, Is that which is beyond the grave. Grace of the Lord Jesus, it is Sufficient

Author: John Murray Meter: Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: 2 Corinthians 12:9 First Line: My God, since I can call thee mine Lyrics: 1 My God, since I can call thee mine, And mine thou surely art; Why should I ever once repine, In language, or in heart. 2 Alas! the cause is clearly seen, From whence these murm'rings rise; My parents sold me under sin, How deep the evil lies! 3 Within my members there's a law, That wars against my mind, Which strives my spirit still to draw From thee, the good, and kind. 4 With buffetting my soul is sore, But this is Satan's part; The thorn within the flesh, still more, Inflicts the poignant smart. 5 Great God! attend thy suppliant's pray'r, Whilst I for succour call! And pour into thy servant's ear The words thou spak'st to Paul. 6 Then in thy grace secure I'll rest, 'Twill be sufficient found; 'Till caught from earth to heav'n, I'm blest, With life, and glory crown'd. Compassed about with songs, my soul was still

Author: A. L. Waring Meter: Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: 2 Corinthians 12:9 Lyrics: Compassed about with songs, my soul was still — But not for lack of light its bliss to see; Thy heart, my Father, could the temple fill, And its deep silence was a song to Thee. My mind reposed in its captivity, By the clear evidence of love subdued; I was content to die, that I might be Redeemed forever from my solitude. All that was in me to Thy throne aspired Longed for Thy heavenly glory to be meet, — Devotion was the joy to be desired, And the the thought of sacrifice was sweet. But He who knew my frame was training me For service needing strength that cannot wane, And teaching me my frail mortality By solemn reckonings of the weight of pain. I in my weakness — how was I to reign, When suffering was the only way to power? And would my spirit in His strength remain, When watching was a strife for one short hour? Conid I with steadfast heart myself deny? Could I with patient love the Cross endure? Should I be every day content to die, To keep my daily life in Him secure? Then with fresh sweetness, from the saints in light, One song of victory to my soul made known, How the hid treasure of the Church's might Was in the power of her Beloved alone. And then Thy glory to my heart was shown, Even as the glory of the blest above; — I knew Thy steadfast spirit was my own, By the pure joy of Thy reflected love. And the mind communed with me that was his Who said “When I am weak then am I strong” — Until the voice of my infirmities Made harmony with that triumphant song.
