Tomorrow Christ Is Coming

Author: Fred Kaan, 1929-2009 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 7 hymnals Topics: The Celebration of the Gospel Story Advent Lyrics: 1 Tomorrow Christ is coming As yesterday He came; A child is born this moment– We do not know its name. The world is full of darkness, Again there is no room; The symbols of existence Are stable, cross and tomb. 2 Tomorrow will be Christmas, The feast of love divine, But for the nameless millions The star will never shine. Still is the census taken With people on the move; New infants born in stables Are crying out for love. 3 There will be no tomorrows For many a baby born. Good Friday falls on Christmas When life is sown as corn. But Jesus Christ is risen And comes again in bread To still our deepest hunger And raise us from the dead. 4 Our God becomes incarnate In ev'ry human birth. Created in God's image, We must make peace on earth. God will fulfil Love's purpose And this shall be the sign: We shall find Christ among us As woman, child or man. Used With Tune: PASSION CHORALE

How bright these glorious spirits shine!

Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 156 hymnals Topics: The Church Celebrates Oneness with the Church in Heaven Lyrics: 1 How bright these glorious spirits shine! Whence all their bright array? How came they to the blissful seats of everlasting day? Lo! these are they, from sufferings great who came to realms of light, and in the blood of Christ have washed those robes which shine so bright. 2 Now, with triumphal palms, they stand before the throne on high, and serve the God they love, amidst the glories of the sky. His presence fills each heart with joy, tunes every mouth to sing: by day, by night, the sacred courts with glad hosannas ring. 3 Hunger and thirst are felt no more, nor suns with scorching ray; God is their sun, whose cheering beams diffuse eternal day. The Lamb who dwells amidst the throne shall o'er them still preside, feed them with nourishment divine, and all their footsteps guide. 4 'Mong pastures green he'll lead his flock, where living streams appear; and God the Lord from every eye shall wipe off every tear. Scripture: Revelation 7:13-17 Used With Tune: ST. ASAPH Text Sources: Scottish Paraphrases, 1781, Parpahrase 66

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven

Author: Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847) Meter: 8.7.8.7.4.4.7 Appears in 539 hymnals Topics: The Church Celebrates Death and Grieving Lyrics: 1 Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to his feet thy tribute bring; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who like me his praise should sing? Praise him! Praise him! Praise the everlasting King. 2 Praise him for his grace and favour to our fathers in distress; praise him, still the same for ever, slow to chide, and swift to bless: Praise him! Praise him! glorious in his faithfulness. 3 Father-like he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows; in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes: Praise him! Praise him! widely as his mercy flows. 4 Frail as summer's flower we flourish; blows the wind and it is gone; but, while mortals rise and perish, God endures unchanging on. Praise him! Praise him! Praise the high eternal One. 5 Angels, help us to adore him; ye behold him face to face; sun and moon, bow down before him; dwellers all in time and space. Praise him! Praise him! Praise with us the God of grace. Scripture: Psalm 103 Used With Tune: PRAISE, MY SOUL

O Jesus, I have promised

Author: John Ernest Bode (1816-1874) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 621 hymnals Topics: The Holy Spirit The Church Celebrates - Confirmation Lyrics: 1 O Jesus, I have promised to serve you to the end; be now and always near me, my master and my friend: I shall not fear the battle if you are by my side, not wander from the pathway if you will be my guide. 2 Oh, let me feel you near me: the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me, and within; but, Jesus, draw still nearer, and shield my soul from sin. 3 Oh, let me hear you speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; Oh, speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, true guardian of my soul. 4 O Jesus, you have promised to all who follow you, that where you are in glory your servant shall be too; and, Jesus, I have promised to serve you to the end: now give me grace to follow, my master and my friend. Scripture: 1 John 2:15-16 Used With Tune: THORNBURY

We have an anchor that keeps the soul

When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain, will your anchor drift, or firm remain? Refrain: We have an anchor that keeps the soul steadfast and sure while the billows roll; fastened to the Rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love! 2 Will your anchor hold in the straits of fear, when the breakers roar and the reef is near? While the surges rage, and the wild winds blow, shall the angry waves then your bark o'erflow? [Refrain] 3 Will your anchor hold in the floods of death, when the waters cold chill your latest breath? On the rising tide you can never fail, while your anchor holds within the veil. [Refrain] 4 Will your eyes behold through the morning light the city of gold and the harbour bright? Will you anchor safe by the heavenly shore, when life's storms are past for evermore? [Refrain] Scripture: Acts 27:13-44 Used With Tune: WILL YOUR ANCHOR HOLD
