b. 1926 Hymnal Number: 2045 Author of "Sing a New Song to the Lord" in Sing the Faith Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Educated at Pembroke College and Ridley Hall, Cambridge, Dudley-Smith has served the Church of England since his ordination in 1950. He has occupied a number of church positions, including parish priest in the diocese of Southwark (1953-1962), archdeacon of Norwich (1973-1981), and bishop of Thetford, Norfolk, from 1981 until his retirement in 1992. He also edited a Christian magazine, Crusade, which was founded after Billy Graham's 1955 London crusade. Dudley-Smith began writing comic verse while a student at Cambridge; he did not begin to write hymns until the 1960s. Many of his several hundred hymn texts have been collected in Lift Every Heart: Collected Hymns 1961-1983 (1984), Songs of Deliverance: Thirty-six New Hymns (1988), and A Voice of Singing (1993). The writer of Christian Literature and the Church (1963), Someone Who Beckons (1978), and Praying with the English Hymn Writers (1989), Dudley-Smith has also served on various editorial committees, including the committee that published Psalm Praise (1973). Fred Pratt Green

1903 - 2000 Hymnal Number: 2027 Author of "Now Praise the Hidden God of Love" in Sing the Faith The name of the Rev. F. Pratt Green is one of the best-known of the contemporary school of hymnwriters in the British Isles. His name and writings appear in practically every new hymnal and "hymn supplement" wherever English is spoken and sung. And now they are appearing in American hymnals, poetry magazines, and anthologies. Mr. Green was born in Liverpool, England, in 1903. Ordained in the British Methodist ministry, he has been pastor and district superintendent in Brighton and York, and now served in Norwich. There he continued to write new hymns "that fill the gap between the hymns of the first part of this century and the 'far-out' compositions that have crowded into some churches in the last decade or more." --Seven New Hymns of Hope , 1971. John Darwall

1732 - 1789 Hymnal Number: 2001 Composer of "DARWALL" in Sing the Faith John Darwall (b. Haughton, Staffordshire, England, 1731; d. Walsall, Staffordshire, England, 1789) The son of a pastor, he attended Manchester Grammar School and Brasenose College, Oxford, England (1752-1756). He became the curate and later the vicar of St. Matthew's Parish Church in Walsall, where he remained until his death. Darwall was a poet and amateur musician. He composed a soprano tune and bass line for each of the 150 psalm versifications in the Tate and Brady New Version of the Psalms of David (l696). In an organ dedication speech in 1773 Darwall advocated singing the "Psalm tunes in quicker time than common [in order that] six verses might be sung in the same space of time that four generally are." Diane Ball

1941 - 2023 Hymnal Number: 2203 Author of "In His Time" in Sing the Faith Linda Diane Cooper Ball USA 1941-2023. Born at Memphis, TN, her family moved to San Francisco, CA, when she was young. In 1959 she eloped and married a Navy man, Herbert Jay Ball, serving on the USS Midway. They had five children: Nan, Jay, Sean, Michael, and Jason. Diane had a love for music and dancing, and she would write songs just to perform them. As a teen she sang on a TV variety show and performed in a number of school and community productions. She loved attending the San Francisco opera, where she could watch her father perform. She wrote music for several stage musicals, including: ‘It Happened One Christmas’, and ‘St Francis of Assisi’. In 1973 Jay and Diane moved to a Christian conference center in northern CA called Springs of Living Water. They both worked for the center. Diane was a camp director there. She started ‘Kids Kamp’ and ‘Teen Kamp’ programs that are still operating. They impacted thousands of young people for Christ. Her vision: That people know Jesus and make Him known. She founded and directed a traveling teen musical group at the camp called “Children of Promise’ (COP). She wrote her famous song while working at the camp. Running late one day for a speaking engagement, she penned ‘In His Time’ while riding to her destination, knowing she would be late. The meeting, however, got a very late start, so it worked out. After COP was disbanded, the family formed a band called ‘New Rain’ that toured for several years, directed by Diane. In 1986 the Balls moved to Kauai, Hawaii, where they founded and ran a shelter for the homeless (partnering with the 700 Club). There, she also served as the youth pastor of the Koloa Church. In 1995 they relocated to the Seattle, WA, area, where Diane served as Development Director at Community Health Center of Snohomish County. She was very good at fundraising because she was passionate about whatever the funding was to achieve. In 2013 the Balls moved back to northern CA, then in 2020, moved to Alma, TX, so they could be near grandchildren. She passed away at Alma, TX. Services were held at the Cowboy Church of Ennis, TX. She had 18 grandchildren and four great-grand children. John Perry

Herbert Brokering

1926 - 2009 Person Name: Herbert F. Brokering Hymnal Number: 2199 Author of "Stay with Us" in Sing the Faith Herbert F. Brokering (b. Beatrice, Nebraska, May 21, 1926; d. Bloomington, Minnesota, November 7, 2009) was a Lutheran pastor with German roots, an author of more than forty books, and a poet and hymn writer known especially for two hymn texts, “Earth and All Stars” and “Alleluia! Christ Is Risen,” both set to the same tune. He was born in Nebraska, the son of a German Lutheran pastor; earned degrees from Wartburg College in Iowa, University of Iowa, and Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, OH, and pursued graduate study in Germany at the University of Kiel and the University of Erlangen. He served as a pastor of three Lutheran congregations, in Pennsylvania, New York, and Texas; taught at the Navy Chaplain’s Career School in Newport, Rhode Island, Luther Seminary and Trinity Seminary, and was also active in the Lutheran World Federation services and the World Council of Churches. b. 1943 Person Name: Stephen R. Adams Hymnal Number: 2119 Author of "Where the Spirit of the Lord Is" in Sing the Faith Stephen Robert Adams USA 1943-present. Born at Woonsocket, RI, he studied music at age seven, taking lessons from a pastor’s wife. At Andover Academy, Andover, MA, he continued music studies. In 1960 he became church organist where his father was a Nazarene pastor. Steve and brother, Nate, were singing on network radio before they were school age. By age 13, he felt God’s call to become a Christian songwriter. The family moved to IN after 1960, and he, again, was church organist. He studied Greek philosophy and English literature at Indiana U, Bloomington, IN. He worked with musician, Doug Oldham, in 1973. By 1974 he had settled in Urbana, OH, and was organist/choirmaster of a church in Xenia, OH. He survived a devastating tornado there in April 1974. Seeing a funnel cloud, he left his car and ran into a furniture store and hid under a sofa he had turned over. Later, his dad spent over an hour removing rubble before there was a hole large enough for his escape. Returning two days later to the store, he found that the National Guard, digging to find him, had found everyone else in the store dead. From this disaster, he wrote the song, ‘Peace in the Midst of the Storm’. That same year he had an allergic reaction to propane gas from his trailer and lost his voice for 2 and a half years, regaining it while traveling as an accompanist with Doug Oldham. In the mid-70s he married Janet ‘Jane’ R, and they had two children: Craig Alfred and Christopher John. He wrote some 24 gospel songs, several becoming well-known.
