In the name which earth and heaven

Author: Rev. J. Ellerton Meter: 8.7 D Appears in 17 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 In the name which earth and heaven, Ever worship, praise, and fear, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Shall a house be builded here: Here with prayer its deep foundations, In the faith of Christ, we lay, Trusting by His help to crown it, With the top-stone in its day. 2 Here as in their due succession Stone on stone the workmen place, Thus, we pray, unseen but surely, Jesu, build us up in grace; Till, within these walls completed, We complete in Thee are found; And to Thee, the one Foundation, Strong and living stones, are bound. 3 Fair shall be Thine earthly temple: Here the careless passer-by Shall bethink him, in its beauty, Of the holier House on high; Weary hearts and troubled spirits Here shall find a still retreat; Sinful souls shall bring their burden Here to the Absolver's feet. 4 Yet with truer, nobler beauty, Lord, we pray, this house adorn, Where Thy Bride, Thy Church redeemèd, Robes her for her marriage morn; Clothed in garments of salvation, Rich with gems of heavenly grace, Spouse of Christ, arrayed and waiting Till she may behold His face. 5 Here in due and solemn order May her ceaseless prayer arise; Here may strains of holy gladness Lift her heart above the skies; Here the word of life be spoken; Here the child of God be sealed; Here the Bread of Heaven be broken, "Till He come," Himself revealed. 6 Praise to Thee, O Master-Builder, Maker of the earth and skies; Praise to Thee, in Whom Thy temple Fitly framed, together lies; Praise to Thee, eternal Spirit, Binding all that lives in one: Till our earthly praise be ended, And the eternal song begun! Amen. Topics: Laying of a Corner-Stone Used With Tune: [In the name which earth and heaven]

When Will People Cease Their Fighting?

Author: Constance Cherry Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 5 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 When will people cease their fighting? When will armies wage no war, nations conquer not their neighbour, weapons idle, used no more? When will guns and bombs be silent? When will captives be set free? All creation groans in longing for the world's true liberty. 2 Floods and earthquakes, drought and famine plague the world with awesome ill, but far greater is war's horror caused by human, stubborn will. Blest are those who, working, praying, purpose in their hearts to be instruments of peace, committed to the nations' harmony. 3 As we strive for peace with vigour, hoping to be shown the way, we are strengthened in the knowledge of a future, perfect day; for we know that deeper, richer peace is ours when Christ shall reign: then will all our swords be plowshares and God's children free from pain. Topics: The Church in the World Commitment: Peace and Justice; Commitment; Justice; Peace (World); Weddings Used With Tune: AUSTRIAN HYMN

Heaven Is Here, Where Hymns of Gladness

Author: John Adams Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 46 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1. Heaven is here, where hymns of gladness Cheer the toilers’ rugged way, In this world where clouds of sadness Often change to night our day; Heaven is here, where misery lightened Of its heavy load is seen, Where the face of sorrow brightened, By the deed of love hath been. 2. Where the sad, the poor, despairing, Are uplifted, cheered, and blest, Where in others’ labors sharing, We can find our surest rest; Where we heed the voice of duty, Tread the path that Jesus trod; This is Heaven, its peace, its beauty, Radiant with the love of God. Used With Tune: AUSTRIA (Haydn) Text Sources: Hymns for Christian Devotion, 1846, number 419
