Gustav Holst

1874 - 1934 Person Name: Gustav Holst, 1874-1934 Scripture: Acts 2 Composer of "THAXTED" in Gather (3rd ed.) Gustav Holst (b. Chelteham, Gloucestershire, England, September 21, 1874, d. London, England, May 25, 1934) was a renowned British composer and musician. Having studied at Cheltenham Grammar School, he soon obtained a professional position as an organist, and later as choirmaster. In 1892, Holst composed a two-act operetta, which so impressed his father that he borrowed the money to send Holst to the Royal College of Music. Severe neuritis in his right hand later caused him to give up the keyboard, and Holst turned to the trombone and composing. In 1895 Holst met Ralph Vaughan Williams, and the two became lifelong friends. Vaughan Williams helped Holst land his first job as a singing teacher. Holst became very interested in Indian and Hindu culture, and composed a number of operas translated from Sanksrit myths. These were not received well in England, however. b. 1926 Scripture: Acts 2:38 Adapter of "God's Holy Spirit Came" in Singing the New Testament Mary Jackson Cathey (b. 1926) was born in Florence, SC, and educated at Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC. She received an advanced degree from Union Seminary - Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond. As a Christian Educator she finds hymn text writing a profound way to express her faith. Her hymns have won contests sponsored by The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, and a number of her poems have been published by John Knox Press, The Pilgrim Press, and Hope Publishing. She has four hymns to her credit in The Presbyterian Hymnal (1990) and others published by Selah Press, Choristers Guild, and Zimbel Press. She formerly served in a similar capacity in the First Presbyterian Church, Anderson, South Carolina. She obtained her M.R.E. degree from the Assembly's Training School, Richmond, Virginia, in 1953; and her A.B. from Winthrop College, Rock Hill, South Carolina, in 1947. Calvin Busch was ordained and installed in 1938 as pastor of Aurora Presbyterian Church in Aurora, Nebraska. He was a graduate of Wheaton College and Westminster Seminary. He also served in churches in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Second Parish OPC in Portland, Maine, before a 20-year tenure at Emmanuel OPC in Whippany, New Jersey.
