Sometimes a Light Surprises

Author: William Cowper Hymnal: RITL1985 #159 (1985) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Scripture: 2 Samuel 23:4 Lyrics: 1 Sometimes a light surprises the Christian while he sings; it is the Lord, who rises eith healing in his wings; when comforts are declining, he grants the soul again a season of clear shining to cheer it after rain. 2 In holy contemplation we sweetly then pursue the theme of God's salvation, and find it ever new; set free from present sorrow we cheerfully can say, e'en let the unknown morrow bring with it what it may. 3 It can bring with it nothing but he will bear us through; who gives the lilies clothing will clothe his people too; beneath the spreading heavens no creature but is fed; Aad he who feeds the ravens will give his children bread. 4 Though vine nor fig tree neither their wonted fruit should bear, though all the field should wither, nor flocks nor herds be there, yet God the same abiding, his praise shall tune my voice, for while in him confiding I cannot but rejoice. Author: Denis Wortman Hymnal: RITL1985 #429 (1985) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Scripture: 2 Kings 2:13 First Line: God of the prophets, bless the prophets' heirs Lyrics: 1 God of the prophets, bless the prophets' heirs; Elijah's mantle o'er Elisha cast; each age in turn for solemn tasks prepares; make each one nobler, stronger than the last. 2 Anoint them prophets! make their ears attend to thy divinest speech; their hearts awake to human need; their lips make eloquent right to enthrone and ev'ry evil break. 3 Anoint them priests! strong intercessors they for pardon and for charity and peace! O might with them the world, though gone astray, pass into Christ'spure life of sacrifice. 4 Anoint them rulers, gentle rulers, Lord! Anoint them with the Spirit of thy Son: theirs not a jeweled crown, a blood-stained sword; theirs, by strong love, for Christ a kingdom won. 5 Send them, apostles, heralds of thy cross; forth may they go to tell all realms thy grace: inspired of thee, may they count all but loss, and stand at last with joy before thy face. Lord, Teach Us How to Pray Aright

Author: James Montgomery Hymnal: RITL1985 #261 (1985) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Job 13:15 Lyrics: 1 Lord, teach us how to pray aright with rev'rence and with fear; though weak and sinful in thy sight, we may, we must draw near. 2 We perish if we cease from prayer: O grant us power to pray; and when to meet thee we prepare, Lord, meet us by the way. 3 Give deep humility, the sense of godly sorrow give; a strong dsiring confidence to hear thy voice and live; 4 faith in the only sacrifice that can for sin atone, to cast our hopes, to fix our eyes on Christ, and Christ alone: 5 patience to watch, and wait, and weep though mercy long delay; courage, our fainting souls to keep and trust thee though thou slay: 6 give these--and then thy will be done; thus, strengthened with all might, we by thy Spirit and thy Son, shall pray, and pray aright.
