In time of tribulation

Author: James Montgomery Hymnal: Sacred Poems and Hymns #185 (1854) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Scripture: Psalm 77 Lyrics: In time of tribulation, Hear, Lord, my feeble cries, With humble supplication To Thee my spirit flies: 188 My heart with grief is breaking, Scarce can my voice complain; Mine eyes, with tears kept waking, Still watch and weep in vain. The days of old, in vision, Bring vanish'd bliss to view; The years of lost fruition Their joys in pangs renew; Remember'd songs of gladness, Through night's lone silence brought, Strike notes of deeper sadness, And stir desponding thought. Hath God cast off for ever? Can time His truth impair? His tender mercy, never Shall I presume to share? Hath He His loving-kindness Shut up in endless wrath? No;--this is my own blindness, That cannot see His path. I call to recollection The years of His right hand, And, strong in His protection, Again through faith I stand: Thy deeds, O Lord! are wonder, Holy are all Thy ways, The secret place of thunder Shall utter forth Thy praise. Thee, with the tribes assembled, O God! the billows saw; 189 They saw Thee, and they trembled, Turn'd, and stood still with awe: The clouds shot hail--they lighten'd, The earth reel'd to and fro; The fiery pillar brighten'd The gulph of gloom below. Thy way is in great waters, Thy footsteps are not known; Let Adam's sons and daughters Confide in Thee alone: Through the wild sea Thou leddest Thy chosen flock of yore; Still on the waves Thou treadest, And Thy redeem'd pass o'er. How shall I sing that majesty

Author: John Mason, 1646-1694 Hymnal: Common Praise #466 (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Scripture: Psalm 77:19 Lyrics: 1 How shall I sing that majesty which angels do admire? Let dust in dust and silence lie; sing, sing, ye heavenly choir. Thousands of thousands stand around thy throne, O God most high; ten thousand times ten thousand sound thy praise; but who am I? 2 Thy brightness unto them appears, whilst I thy footsteps trace; a sound of God comes to my ears, but they behold thy face: I shall, I fear, be dark and cold, with all my fire and light; yet when thou dost accept their gold, Lord, treasure up my mite. 3 Enlighten with faith's light my heart, inflame it with love's fire; then shall I sing and bear a part with that celestial choir. They sing, because thou art their sun; Lord, send a beam on me; for where heaven is but once begun there alleluias be. 4 How great a being, Lord, is thine, which doth all beings keep! Thy knowledge is the only line to sound so vast a deep: thou art a sea without a shore, a sun without a sphere; thy time is now and evermore, thy place is everywhere. Why should this earth delight us so?

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #458 (1835) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Psalm 77 Lyrics: Why should this earth delight us so? Why should we fix our eyes On these low grounds where sorrows grow, And every pleasure dies ? While time his sharpest teeth prepares Our comforts to devour, There is a land above the stars, And joys above his power. Nature shall be dissolved and die, The sun must end his race, The earth and sea for ever fly Before my Savior's face. When will that glorious morning rise? When the last trumpet sound, And call the nations to the skies, From underneath the ground? Psalm 77 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.165 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Psalm 77 First Line: How awful is thy chast'ning rod! Lyrics: "How awful is thy chast'ning rod!" May thy own children say: "The great, the wise, the dreadful God! How holy is his way !" I'll meditate his works of old, The King that reigns above; I'll hear his ancient wonders told, And learn to trust his love. Long did the house of Joseph lie With Egypt's yoke oppressed; Long he delayed to hear their cry, or gave his people rest. The sons of good old Jacob seemed Abandoned to their foes; But his almighty arm redeemed The nation that he chose. Isr'el, his people and his sheep, Must follow where he calls; He bade them venture through the deep, And made the waves their walls. The waters saw thee, mighty God! The waters saw thee come; Backward they fled, and frighted stood, To make thine armies room. Strange was thy journey through the sea Thy footsteps, Lord, unknown; Terrors attend the wondrous way That brings thy mercies down. [Thy voice, with terror in the sound, Through clouds and darkness broke; All heav'n in lightning shone around, And earth with thunder shook. Thine arrows through the skies were hurled; How glorious is the Lord! Surprise and trembling seized the world, And his own saints adored. He gave them water from the rock, And safe, by Moses' hand, Through a dry desert led his flock Home to the promised land.] Topics: Afflictions hope in them; Hope in darkness; Afflictions very great; Comfort from ancient providences; Israel saved from Egypt, and brought to Canaan; Melancholy and hope; Patience in darkness; Providence recorded; Remembrance of former deliverances Languages: English

How awful is thy chast'ning rod!

Hymnal: Church Hymn Book #P.LXXVII.II (1816) Scripture: Psalm 77:11-20 Lyrics: 11 "How awful is thy chast'ning rod! (May thy own children say) The great, the wise, the dreadful God! How holy is his way!" 12 I’ll meditate his works of old, Who reigns in heav'n above, I’ll hear his ancient wonders told, And learn to trust his love. 13 He saw the house of Joseph lie With Egypt’s yoke opprest; Long he delay'd to hear their cry, Nor gave his people rest. 14 The sons of pious Jacob seem'd Abandon'd to their foes; But his almighty arm redeem'd The nation that he chose. 15 From slavish chains he sets them free They follow where he calls; He bade them venture thro' the deep, And made the waves their walls. 16 The waters saw thee, mighty God, The waters saw thee come; Backward they fled, and frighted stood, To make thine armies room. 17 Strange was thy journey thro' the sea, Thy footsteps, Lord, unknown; Terrors attend the wond'rous way That brings thy mercies down. 18 [Thy voice with terror in the sound Thro' clouds and darkness broke; All heav’n in lightning shone around, And earth with thunder shook. 19 Thine arrows thro' the skies were hurl'd, How glorious is the Lord! Surprise and tremb'ling seiz'd the world, And all his saints ador'd. 20 He gave them water from the rock; And safe by Moses’ hand, Thro' a dry desert led his flock To Canaan's promis'd land.] Topics: Comfort derived from ancient providence Languages: English
