Chester G. Allen

John E. Gould

1821 - 1875 Person Name: J. E. Gould Topics: Devotional or Worship Composer of "[Jesus, Savior, pilot me]" in Assembly Songs John Edgar Gould USA 1821-1875. Born in Bangor, ME, he became a musician. He managed music stores in New York City and Philadelphia, PA., the latter with composer partner, William Fischer. He married Josephine Louisa Barrows, and they had seven children: Blanche, Marie, Ida, John, Josephine, Josephine, and Augusta. He compiled eight religious songbooks from 1846 thru 1869. He died while traveling in Algiers, Africa, and was buried in Philadelphia, PA. John Perry

Chas. H. Marsh

1885 - 1956 Topics: Devotional or Worship Composer of "[One day when heaven was filled with His praises]" in Assembly Songs Born: April 8, 1886, Magnolia, Iowa. Died: April 12, 1956, La Jolla, California. Buried: Riverview Cemetery, Brawley, California. Marsh’s father was pastor of the Congregational Church in Magnolia, Iowa. His gift for the piano was evident at an early age, and after he graduated from high school, Wilbur Chapman asked him to play for the Winona Lake Chautauqua and Bible Conference in Indiana. He later taught at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (1915-19) and the University of Redlands (1919-26). He studied music in France in the 1920’s, and became president of the European School of Music and Art in Fort Wayne, Indiana. From 1928 to 1932, he played the organ at the First Presbyterian Church. In 1932, he moved to Florida to become professor of organ at the University of Florida, Gainesville, and to serve as organist and choir director at the First Baptist Church. In 1935, he moved to California, where he worked as district supervisor for the Federal Music Project in San Diego until 1939. He also played the organ and directed the choir at St. James-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in La Jolla (1936-56). F. A. Graves

1856 - 1927 Person Name: F. A. G. Topics: Devotional or Worship Author of "He Was Nailed to the Cross for Me" in Assembly Songs Rv Frederick Arthur Graves USA 1856-1927. Born at Williamstown, MA, he was raised in a Christian family, but was orphaned at age 9 after the death of his father, a taylor, then three years later his mother (tuberculosis), he lived on a farm with a family names Hollis that worked him hard and treated him poorly. He was diagnosed with epilepsy when 14. At 21 he moved to Nobles County, MN, and it seemed that his seizures had stopped. Grateful for that, he served the American Sunday School Union as an organizer and evangelist. He was musical, and after age 35 wrote 43 songs. He, with wife Vina, raised three children, Arthur, Irene, and Carl. He studied Bible and music in Chicago, IL and Northfield, MA. Returning to Minneapolis and hearing evangelist John A Dowie, he experienced permanent healing, which provided a backdrop for his gospel songs. He was ordained an Assemblies of God minister in 1916. Later, he moved to Zion Hill,IL, where he lived the rest of his life. He died at Zion City, IL. Nearly 1000 people attended his funeral there. John Perry

Died: June 10, 1945, Flushing, Ohio. Buried: Flushing, Ohio. Raised a Methodist, Kirk became associated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance (CAMA) in 1887. He organized the CAMA’s Gospel Mission in Flushing, Ohio, in 1907, and as part of the Ohio Quartet, sang at CAMA conventions and gatherings. --www.hymntime.com/tch/ ========================== Kirk, James M. (Flushing, Ohio, 1854--1945). Converted at an early age. Became associated with the C&MA in 1887, was a first subscriber to The Alliance Weekly, and wonderfully healed at the first Cleveland Alliance convention. Spent entire life on a farm but devoted much time to Christian work. A member of a famous singing group, the Ohio Quartet, which for 12 years traveled extensively in convention work. In 1906 organized the Gospel Mission of the C&MA in Flushing. An outstanding figure in the Central District as song leader and in Bible teaching and prayer. Grandfather of Geraldine Southern, well-known mezzo-soprano, music instructor at Nyack, and director of music in Alliance churches. Kirk wrote some 40 songs, many while busy with farm chores. Seth Sykes

They traveled around the UK. Seth preached and wrote lyrics to many hymns. They used lantern slide shows to illustrate their message and draw people to their meetings. L. L. Pickett

1859 - 1928 Topics: Devotional or Worship Composer of "[Oh, the joy of sins forgiv'n]" in Assembly Songs Rv Leander Lycurgus Pickett USA 1859-1928. Born at Burnsville, MS, he became a Methodist evangelist. He held meetings in several states and at Holiness campgrounds. After marrying Ludie, they served pastorates in northeast TX, and Columbia, SC, before moving to Wilmore, KY. Pickett married Pruvy Melviney Dorough in 1878, and they had a son, James, in 1880. After her death in 1887, he married Ludie in 1888. He was a renowned speaker, leader, minister, author, hymnwriter, and patriot, prominent in the Holiness Movement, and helped found Asbury College (now University), at Wilmore, KY, where he also served as the financial agent of the board of trustees for many years. The Picketts boarded m,inistry students attending Asbury, among whom was missionary E Stanley Jones. In 1905 a student prayer meeting at the Pickett home spilled out to the Asbury campus in a revival that spread around the town of Wilmore. Between 1891 and 1926 Pickett published 11 song books, some with others, including John Sweney, William J Kirkpatrick, John Bryant, Martin Knapp, Elisha A Hoffman, Burke Culpepper, William Marks, Benjamin Butts, and Robert McNeill. He died at Middlesboro, KY. John Perry
