Divine Mercies in constant Succession

Author: Dr. S. Stennett Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 51 hymnals Scripture: Lamentations 3:22-23 First Line: How various and how new Lyrics: 1 How various and how new Are thy compassions, Lord! Each morning shall thy mercies shew, Each night thy truth record. 2 Thy goodness, like the sun, Dawn'd on our early days, Ere infant-reason had begun To form our lips to praise. 3 Each object we beheld Gave pleasure to our eyes; And nature all our senses held In bands of sweet surprise. 4 But pleasures more refin'd Awaited that bless'd day, When light arose upon our mind, And chas'd our sins away. 5 How new thy mercies then! How sovereign and how free! Our souls that had been dead in sin, Were made alive to thee. Pause. 6 Now we expect a day Still brighter far than this, When death shall bear our souls away To realms of light and bliss. 7 There rapturous scenes of joy Shall burst upon our sight: And every pain, and tear, and sigh, Be drown'd in endless night. 8 Beneath thy balmy sing, O sun of righteousness, Our happy souls shall sit and sing The wonders of thy grace. 9 Nor shall that radiant day So joyfully begun, In evening shadows die away, Beneath the setting sun. 10 How various and how new Are thy compassions, Lord! Eternity thy love shall shew, And all thy truth record. Topics: Time and Eternity; Mercies constant succession

Author: Johann Mühlmann, 1573-1613; Catherine Winkworth, 1827-78 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 29 hymnals Scripture: Lamentations 3:19-26 Lyrics: 1 While morning still is breaking, and day replaces night, beneath God's care awaking we thank him for new light. We thank him that he calls us to life and health anew; whatever now befalls us his care will still be true. 2 O Israel's guardian, hear us, Watch o'er us this day; in all we do be near us. For others, too, we pray; to you we would commend them, our Church, our youth, our land; direct them and defend them when dangers are at hand. 3 O grant us peace and gladness, give us our daily bread, shield us from grief and sadness, on us your blessings shed. Grant that our whole behaviour in truth and righteousness may praise you, Lord, our Saviour, whose holy name we bless. 4 You are our vine: O nourish your branches, so that we may grow in you and flourish and ever fruitful be; your Spirit pour within us, and let the gifts of grace to those good actions win us that best may show your praise. God the Soul's Only Portion

Appears in 16 hymnals Scripture: Lamentations 3:24 First Line: In vain the world's alluring smile Lyrics: I. In vain, the world's alluring smile Would my unwary heart beguile: Deluding world! its brightest day, Dream of a moment, fleets away! II. Earth's highest pleasures, could they last, Would pall and languish on the taste; Such airy chaff was ne'er design'd To feed th'immortal, craving mind. III. To nobler bliss my soul aspires, Come, Lord, and fill these vast desires; Be thou my portion, here I rest, Since of my utmost wish possest. IV. O let thy sacred word impart Its sealing influence to my heart; With pow'r, and light, and love divine, Assure my soul that thou art mine. V. The blissful word, with joy replete, Shall bid my gloomy fears retreat, And heav'n-born hope, serenely bright, Shine chearful thro' this mortal night. VI. Then shall my joyful spirit rise On wings of faith above the skies; And when these transient scenes are o'er, And this vain world shall tempt no more: VII. O may I reach the blissful plains, Where thy unclouded glory reigns, And dwell forever near thy throne In joys to mortal thought unknown.

The Penitent's Plea

Author: R. M. Offord Appears in 12 hymnals Scripture: Lamentations 3:26 First Line: Jesus, heed me, lost and dying Lyrics: 1 Jesus, heed me, lost and dying, Unto thee for shelter flying, Hear, oh, hear, my heart's sore crying: Heed me, or I die! 2 All my sin and sorrow feeling, Come I, as the leper, kneeling; Come to thee for help and healing, Heal me, or I die! 3 Naught have I to plead of merit, Naught but curse do I inherit; By thy gracious, quickening Spirit Save me, or I die! 4 Not my tears of deep contrition Can secure one sin's remission, Helpless, hopeless my condition: Help me, or I die! 5 Far away my dead works flinging, Nothing owning, nothing bringing, Only to thy mercy clinging: Bless me, or I die! 6 By thy cross, where hope is beaming, By its crimson fountain streaming, Flowing for the world's redeeming: Cleanse me, or I die! 7 So my soul shall praise thee ever, For the love which changes never, From which not ev'n death can sever: Saved no more to die. How Lovely Shines the Morning Star

Author: Frances E. Cox; Burkhard Wiesenmeyer Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7.4.4.4.4.8 Appears in 11 hymnals Scripture: Lamentations 3:22-23 First Line: How lovely shines the morning star! Lyrics: 1 How lovely shines the morning star! In twilight sky bright gleams afar; The reign of night is ended. Creation stirs to hail the light Whose glories now with radiance bright Stream forth in beauty splendid. Both far And near All things living Thanks are giving, Praise outpouring, Earth and sky the Lord adoring. 2 Then haste, my soul, thy song to raise, Delay thou not thy Lord to praise, Bow down in adoration. For glory, Lord, to Thee belongs, Thy praise resounds in grateful songs Thou Lord of all creation. Let all Recall Hymns of gladness Without sadness For Thy favor And Thy mercy never waver. 3 Tho' evil spirits thro' the night With hellish craft and watchful spite Came round me without number, Yet Thou, O Jesus, with Thy pow'r Wast near me in that threat'ning hour, Didst guard me in my slumber. Praise be To Thee, My Contender And defender, I'll adore Thee While on earth I walk before Thee. 4 Pour down Thy grace in cheering streams, And warm my heart with mercy's beams From heav'n, Thy throne of beauty; Thy Spirit ever lead and guide That in my calling I abide And find my joy in duty. Send light And might That each measure, Plan and pleasure, Heav'nward tending, E'er in Thee may find its ending. 5 Keep grief, if this may be, away; If not, Thy will be done, I pray, My choice to thine resigning. Then, O my heart, cast care aside, God through the cross His own hath tried; Bear loss without repining. Hope still Through ill; To God cleaving, Grace receiving, We shall wonder At God's goodness here and yonder. Amen. Topics: Times and Seasons Morning Used With Tune: WIE SCHÖN LEUCHTET
