Brave Sepherds Quaked

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Luke 2:8-11 First Line: Brave shepherds quaked with fear that night Lyrics: 1 Brave shepherds quaked with fear that night as barren hills were bathed in light, till angel voices sang on high, “Be not afraid! The Christ is night!” 2 How many times did Jesus chide his friends who traveled by his side, “Do not be anxious, do not fear! Believe that God walks with you here.” 3 The tomb was empty they could see. Afraid, they cried, “How can this be?” An angel said, “He is not here. The Christ has risen! How Far It Was to Bethlehem

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Luke 2:4-5 Lyrics: 1 How far it was to Bethlehem for Mary, great with child, and Joseph, trusted with the one upon whom God had smiled! From Nazareth to Jericho, then up a long, steep road, they journeyed on to David’s town with their most precious load. 2 They could not find a place to stay save in a stable stall, and there amid the animals was born the Lord of all. The heavens burst with angel-song to shepherds on the hill: “The Christ is born and peace will come to people of good will.” 3 The shepherds hurried off to find this new-born baby boy. “The Promised One is here, at last! Our hearts are filled with joy!” They knelt before his manger bed, and gazed upon the face that showed in its sweet countenance Love’s gift of peace and grace. 4 How far it is to Bethlehem for us who live today, who bear the burdens of our doubts and do not trust Love’s way. God, as we journey on in life, let angel-songs ne’er cease, that, like the shepherds, we may find in Christ a hope for peace. Topics: Christmas Journey to Bethlehem Used With Tune: JERICHO ROAD

When Mary Heard An Angel Say

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Luke 2:8-9 Lyrics: 1 When Mary heard an angel say that she would have a son, that God would make her mother of the long-awaited one, she questioned that strange promise, yet trusted and believed, and, wonder of all wonders, a child she soon conceived. 2 When Joseph heard an angel call him in his dreams at night to care for Mary and her child, so precious in God’s sight, he listened to each bidding, then trusted and obeyed, and, wonder of all wonders, God’s promised one was saved. 3 When shepherds heard an angel tell the good news of Christ’s birth, that peace, through people of good will, would come to all the earth, they shook with fear, and trembled, then to the stable sped, and wonder of all wonders, knelt down beside his bed. 4 God sent these angel messengers to Mary, blessed one, and faithful Joseph who would care for her and for her son; to ordinary shepherds, at work out on a hill, that, wonder of all wonders, each one might know God’s will. 5 Oh, God, we long for messengers to bring us word today of your great love and plan for us. Oh, come to us, we pray. Surprise us now with angels, and make us all aware that, wonder of all wonders, you also may be there. Topics: Christmas Angels' messages Used With Tune: EVONNE

Who Was There

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Meter: 9.7.9.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Luke 2:8-20 First Line: Who was there to hear good news proclaimed Lyrics: 1 Who was there to hear good news proclaimed by an angel from on high? Who was there to hear the glorias that rang throughout the sky? Only shepherds on a barren hill, caring for their flocks that night; only shepherds lifting up their eyes to see the wondrous sight. 2 Who knelt there beside the manger bed of the new-born holy child? Who stood round to sing the angels’ song to Mary, mother mild? Only shepherds bravely greeting him who would rule their hearts one day; only shepherds trusting peace would come to those who walk his way. 3 Who amazed their friends with stories of angel songs, incarnate Word? Who gave thanks and praised God joyfully for wonders seen and heard? Only shepherds, simple folk and poor, on a hill near Bethlehem; only shepherds wise enough to see that Christ had come for them.
