O Jesus, I have promised

Author: John Ernest Bode, 1816-1874 Hymnal: CAH2000 #503a (2000) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Lyrics: 1 O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; be thou for ever near me, my Master and my friend: I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side, not wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide. 2 O let me feel thee near me: the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but, Jesus, draw thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin. 3 O let me hear thee speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; O speak and make me listen, thou guardian of my soul. 4 O Jesus, thou hast promised, to all who follow thee, that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be; and, Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end: O give me grace to follow, my Master and my friend. 5 O let me see thy foot-marks, and in them plant mine own; my hope to follow duly is in thy strength alone: O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heav'n receive me, my Savior and my friend. O little town of Bethlehem

Author: Phillips Brooks, 1835-1893 Hymnal: CAH2000 #508a (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. 2 O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the King, and peace to all the earth; For Christ is born of Mary; and, gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wond'ring love. 3 How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is giv'n! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heav'n. No ear may hear his coming; but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. 4 O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell: O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel. Topics: Christmas; Years A, B, and C Christmas Day Scripture: Job 38:7-11 Languages: English Tune Title: FOREST GREEN
