Jesus, thy wand'ring sheep behold!

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 69 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 37 Lyrics: 1 Jesus, thy wandering sheep behold! See, Lord, with yearning bowels see, Poor souls that cannot find the fold, 'Till sought and gather'd in by thee. 2 Lost are they now, and scatter'd wide, In pain, and weariness and want: With no kind Shepherd near, to guide The sick, and spiritless, and faint. 3 Thou, only thou, the kind and good, The sheep-redeeming shepherd art; Collect thy flock, and give them food And pastors after thine own heart. 4 In ev'ry messenger reveal The grace they preach divinely free; That each may by thy Spirit tell: "He dy'd for all, who dy'd for me." 5 A double portion from above Of thy all-quick'ning light impart; Shed forth thy universal love In ev'ry faithful pastor's heart. 6 Thine only glory let them seek, O let their hearts with love o'erflow; Let them believe, and therefore speak, And spread thy mercy's praise below. Lift Every Voice and Sing

Author: James Weldon Johnson, 1871-1938 Meter: Irregular Appears in 47 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 37:5 Lyrics: 1 Lift every voice and sing, Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun Of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won. 2 Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered; Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the bright gleam of our bright star is cast. 3 God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might, Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand, True to our God, True to our native land. How should the sons of Adam's race

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 37 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 37:1-15 Lyrics: How should the sons of Adam's race Be pure before their God? If he contend in righteousness, We fall beneath his rod. To vindicate my words and thoughts I'll make no more pretence; Not one of all my thousand faults Can bear a just defence. Strong is his arm, his heart is wise; What vain presumers dare Against their Maker's hand to rise, Or tempt th' unequal war? [Mountains, by his almighty wrath, From their old seats are torn; He shakes the earth from south to north, And all her pillars mourn. He bids the sun forbear to rise, Th' obedient sun forbears; His hand with sackcloth spreads the skies, And seals up all the stars. He walks upon the stormy sea, Flies on the stormy wind; There's none can trace his wondrous way, Or his dark footsteps find.]

All Depends on Our Possessing

Author: Catherine Winkworth, 1827-1878 Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 26 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 37:5-6 Lyrics: 1 All depends on our possessing God's abundant grace and blessing, though all earthly wealth depart. They who trust with faith unshaken in their God are not forsaken and will keep a dauntless heart. 2 He who to this day has fed me and to many joys has led me is and ever shall be mine. He who ever gently schools me, he who daily guides and rules me will remain my help divine. 3 Many spend their lives in fretting over trifles and in getting things that have no solid ground. I shall strive to win a treasure that will bring me lasting pleasure and that now is seldom found. 4 When with sorrow I am stricken, hope anew my heart will quicken; all my longing shall be stilled. To his loving-kindness tender soul and body I surrender, for on God alone I build. 5 Well he knows what best to grant me; all the longing hopes that haunt me, joy and sorrow, have their day. I shall doubt his wisdom never; as God wills, so be it ever; I commit to him my way. 6 If my days on earth he lengthen, he my weary soul will strengthen; all my trust in him I place. Earthly wealth is not abiding, like a stream away is gliding; safe I anchor in his grace. Topics: Trust Used With Tune: ALLES IST AN GOTTES SEGEN Text Sources: Andächtige Haus-Kirche, Nürnberg, 1676
