The roseate hues of early dawn

Author: Mrs C. F. Alexander Hymnal: The Hymnal, Revised and Enlarged, as adopted by the General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America in the year of our Lord 1892 #409 (1894) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Tune Title: [The roseate hues of early dawn] Lyrics: 1 The roseate hues of early dawn, The brightness of the day, The crimson of the sunset sky, How fast they fade away! Oh, for the pearly gates of heaven! Oh, for the golden floor! Oh, for the Sun of righteousness That setteth nevermore! 2 The highest hopes we cherish here, How fast they tire and faint! How many a spot defiles the robe That wraps an earthly saint! Oh, for a heart that never sins! Oh, for a soul washed white! Oh, for a voice to praise our King, Nor weary day or night! 3 Here faith is ours, and heavenly hope, And grace to lead us higher; But there are perfectness and peace, Beyond our great desire. Oh, by Thy love and anguish, Lord, And by Thy life laid down, Grant that we fall not from Thy grace, Nor cast away our crown! Amen. Topics: Aspiration Languages: English

Jesu! – the very thought is sweet!

Author: J. M. Neale, 1818-66 Hymnal: The New English Hymnal #291b (1986) Tune Title: THE ROSY SEQUENCE Lyrics: 1 Jesu! the very thought is sweet! In that dear name all heart-joys meet; But sweeter than the honey far The glimpses of his presence are. 2 No word is sung more sweet than this: No name is heard more full of bliss: No thought brings sweeter comfort nigh, Than Jesus, Son of God most high. 3 Jesu! the hope of souls forlorn! How good to them for sin that mourn! To them that seek thee, O how kind! But what art thou to them that find? 4 Jesu, thou sweetness, pure and blest, Truth’s fountain, Light of souls distrest, Surpassing all that heart requires, Exceeding all that soul desires! 5 No tongue of mortal can express, No letters write its blessedness: Alone who hath thee in his heart Knows, love of Jesus! what thou art. 6 *I seek for Jesus in repose, When round my heart its chambers close; Abroad, and when I shut the door, I long for Jesus evermore. 7 *With Mary in the morning gloom I seek for Jesus at the tomb; For him, with love's most earnest cry, I seek with heart and not with eye. 8 *Jesus, to God the Father gone, Is seated on the heavenly throne; My heart hath also passed from me, That where he is there it may be. 9 We follow Jesus, now, and raise The voice of prayer, the hymn of praise, That He at last may make us meet With him to gain the heav'nly seat. Amen. Topics: Sacraments and Other Rites Holy Communion; The Circumcision of Christ January 1st

I heard the voice of Jesus say

Author: Horatius N. Bonar (1808-1889) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #540 (2005) Tune Title: THE ROWAN TREE Lyrics: 1 I heard the voice of Jesus say, 'Come unto me and rest; lay down, thou weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast': I came to Jesus as I was, so weary, worn, and sad; I found in him a resting-place, and he has made me glad. 2 I heard the voice of Jesus say, 'Behold, I freely give the living water; thirsty one, stoop down and drink, and live': I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him. 3 I heard the voice of Jesus say, 'I am this dark world's Light; Look unto me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright': I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my Star, my Sun; and in that light of life I'll walk, till travelling days are done.
