1807 - 1888 Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Author of "Christ Is Mine" Barrows, Elijah Porter, S.T.D., born at Mansfield, Connecticut, Jan. 5, 1805, and graduated at Yale, 1826. Ordained in 1832, he was Pastor of First Free Presbyterian Church, N. Y., 1835-7; Professor of Sacred Literature in Western Reserve College, 1837-52; of Hebrew Language and Literature at Andover, 1853-66; and of the same at Oberlin, Ohio, 1872. His publications include Memoir of E. Judson, 1852; Companion to the Bible, 1869; Sacred Geography and Antiquities, 1872, &c. His hymn:— Hallelujah, Christ is mine [peace in Christ] was written at Hudson, Ohio, in 1846, in 6 stanzas of 6 lines. It was taken by Mr. Trowbridge (a Missionary of the American Board) to Constantinople, and there translated into two or three languages. Its first publication in English was in the Oberlin Manual of Praise, 1880, No. 270. In this form, stanzas iii. and iv. are omitted. Dr. Barrows has also written several other hymns and versions of Psalms; but these have not come into common use. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Lilian G. Crisp

Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Author of "Gracious and eternal Lord, by all nations be" Lilian G. Crisp is Secretary of the Samuel Marsden Collegiate School, a day and boarding school for girls located in Karori, Wellington, New Zealand. Her "spare-time" interests are many, however. She has written many hymns and poems which have received recognition in New Zealand. She is the author of a book of children's poems entitled "Gilbert's Book"; and is about to publish another, "Christina's Book". She has written religious drama, winning on one occasion first place in the New Zealand Religious Drama Society competition, and in 1956 placing second in a similar contest. Her literary work has given her an active place in the New Zealand Women Writers Society. Miss Crisp is a very active member of the Methodist Church, and has participated in many projects in the local congregation and in the larger interests of the Church.
