Come blessed spirit from above

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Acts 10:42-48 Lyrics: 1 Come blessed spirit from above, And visit us below-- Cause us to taste and feel thy love: In thee to live and grow. 2 No gift but thine our soul inspires To love thee as we would; Nor work is us such pure desires, To serve thee as we should. 3 Thy gifts alone can cheer the mind And cause our fears depart; Without that, we are deaf and blind, And of a stubborn heart. 4 By nature we are prone to ill: Perverse are all our ways-- And we have neither strength nor will To live unto thy praise. 5 But when thy blessings are bestow'd, These wants are all supplied! And we partake the grace of God Till we are sanctified. 6 Thus we are made the truth to hear, And trust unto thy word-- And with a Godly holy fear To worship thee our Lord. Topics: Whitsun-Monday

At the Font We Start Our Journey

Author: Jeffery Rowthorn Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Acts 10:36-43 Lyrics: 1 At the font we start our journey, in the Easter faith baptized; doubts and fears no longer blind us, by the light of Christ surprised. Alleluia! Alleluia! Hope held out and realized. 2 At the pulpit we are fashioned by the Easter tale retold into witnesses and prophets, by the power of Christ made bold. Alleluia! Alleluia! Faith proclaimed, yet still untold. 3 At the altar we are nourished with the Easter gift of bread; in our breaking it to pieces see the love of Christ outspread. Alleluia! Alleluia! Life embraced, yet freely shed. 4 At the door we are commissioned, now the Easter victory's won, to restore a world divided to the peace of Christ as one. Alleluia! Alleluia! Easter's work must still be done. Topics: The Grace of Jesus Christ Christ's Resurrection and Exaltation; The Sacraments of the Church Baptism, Confirmation, Reaffirmation Used With Tune: LAUDA ANIMA

O Blessed truth the Gospel shows

Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Acts 10:34-41 Lyrics: 1 O Blessed truth the Gospel shews, On which may be relied, As Peter taught the partial Jews, All doubts are laid aside. 2 No pref'rence unto man is giv'n, Because of birth and name; But all the nations under heav'n, Have equal right and claim. 3 All those who humbly fear the Lord, And seek his righteousness, All those who trust unto his word, Have endless life and peace. 4 This doctrine through the promis'd land First to the Jews was shown; And by the Savior's great command Made to all nations known. 5 The Jews had crucified and slain, Jesus up on the tree! But O, he rose, and lives again, To all eternity. 6 O happy news sent far abroad! As prophecied before: All may be reconcil'd to God, And live for evermore. Topics: Easter Monday

Children of God, reach out to one another!

Author: John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) Meter: 11.10.11.10 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Acts 10:38 Lyrics: 1 Children of God, reach out to one another! Where pity dwells, the peace of God is there; to worship rightly is to love each other, each smile a hymn, each kindly deed a prayer. 2 For he whom Jesus loved has truly spoken: the holier worship which God deigns to bless restores the lost, and binds the spirit broken, and feeds the widow and the fatherless. 3 Follow with reverent steps the great example of him whose holy work was doing good; so shall the wide earth seem our Father's temple, each loving life a psalm of gratitude. 4 Then shall all shackles fall; the stormy clangour of wild war music o'er the earth shall cease; love shall tread out the baleful fire of anger, and in its ashes plant the tree of peace. Topics: Our Response to Christ In Discipleship; Our Response to God in the worship of God's house; Church Worship; Compassion; Peace Used With Tune: INTERCESSOR

The one who longs to make us whole

Author: Edith Sinclair Downing (b. 1922) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Acts 10:38 Lyrics: 1 The one who longs to make us whole is waiting to embrace our broken lives, so we can know the power of healing grace. God's love surrounds our suffering, and keeps us through the night; God helps us bear our deep despair till we see morning light. 2 The one who saves us from ourselves is waiting to release our hearts from chains of self-reproach and failure to find peace. When harmful habits leave us bruised, distraught by inner pain, God comes to us through trusted friends, and helps us hope again. 3 The one who understands our need accepts us as we are; and, like a loved one, welcomes us when we have wandered far. God never says we come too late to be forgiven, free, but promises we can become the self we're meant to be. Topics: The Church Celebrates Wholenss and Healing; Despair and Trouble; God Love of; Suffering Used With Tune: THIRD MODE MELODY
