Dear Christians, one and all rejoice

Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymnal #250 (1880) Lyrics: 1 Dear Christians, one and all rejoice, With exultation springing, And, with united heart and voice And holy rapture singing, Proclaim the wonders God has done, How His right arm the vict'ry won; Right dearly it hath cost Him. 2 Fast bound in Satan's chains I lay; Death brooded darkly o'er me. Sin was my torment night and day; In sin my mother bore me. Deeper and deeper still I fell; My life became a living hell, So firmly sin possessed me. 3 My good works so imperfect were, They had no power to aid me; My will God's judgments could not bear, Yea, prone to evil made me: Grief drove me to despair, and I Had nothing left me but to die; To hell I fast was sinking 4 Then God beheld my wretched state With deep commiseration; He thought upon His mercy great, And willed my soul's salvation; He turned to me a Father's heart; Not small the cost! to heal my heart; Not small the cost! to heal my smart, He gave His best and dearest. 5 He spoke to His beloved Son: 'Tis time to have compassion: Then go, bright Jewel of my crown, And bring to man salvation; From sin and sorrow set him free; Slay bitter death for him, that he May live with Thee forever. 6 The Son obeyed right cheerfully, And, born of virgin mother, Came down upon the earth to me, That He might be my brother: His mighty power doth work unseen, He came in fashion poor and mean, And took the devil captive. 7 He sweetly said, 'Hold fast by Me, I am thy Rock and Castle. Your ransom I myself will be; For thee I strive and wrestle:' For I am with thee, I am thine And evermore thou shalt be mine, The foe shall not divide us. 8 The foe shall shed my precious blood, Me of my life bereaving; All this I suffer for thy good, Be steadfast and believing: Life shall from death the vict'ry win, My innocence shall bear thy sin, So art thou blest forever. 9 Now to My Father I depart, From earth to heaven ascending, Thence heavenly wisdom to impart, The Holy Spirit sending: He shall in trouble comfort thee, Teach thee to know and follow me, And to the truth conduct thee. 10 What I have done and taught, teach thou, My ways forsake thou never, So shall my kingdom flourish now, And God be praised, forever: And God be praised, forever: Take heed lest men with base alloy The heavenly treasure should destroy; This counsel I bequeath thee. Dear Christians, one and all rejoice

Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymn-book #310 (1918) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 Dear Christians, one and all rejoice, With exultation springing, And with united heart and voice And holy rapture singing. Tell how our God beheld our need, And sing His sweet and wondrous deed; Right dearly it hath cost Him. 2 Fast bound in Satan's chains I lay, Death brooded darkly o'er me, My sin oppressed me night and day, Therein my mother bore me; Deeper and deeper still I fell, Life had became a living hell, So firmly sin possessed me. 3 My good works could avail me naught, For they with sin were stainèd; Free-will against God's judgment fought, And dead to good remainèd; Grief drove me to despair, and I Had nothing left me but to die, To hell I fast was sinking. 4 Then God beheld my wretched state With deep commiseration; He thought upon His mercy great, And willed my soul's salvation; He turned to me a Father's heart-- Not small the cost!--to heal my smart, He gave his best and dearest. 5 He spake to His beloved Son: 'Tis time to have compassion; Then go, my heart's most precious crown, And bring to man salvation; From sin and sorrow set him free, Slay bitter death for him, that he May live with Thee forever. 6 The Son His Father did obey, And, born of virgin-mother, He came awhile on earth to stay, That He might be my brother. His mighty power He hidden bore, A servant's form like mine, He wore, To lead the Devil captive. 7 He spake to me: "Hold fast by me, I am thy rock and castle; I wholly give myself for thee, For thee I strive and wrestle; For I am thine, and thou art mine, Henceforth my place is also thine; The foe shall never part us. 8 The foe shall shed my precious blood, Me of my life bereaving; All this I suffer for thy good; Be steadfast and believing. Life shall from death the victory win, Mine innocence shall bear thy sin, So art thou blest forever. 9 Now to my Father I depart, From earth to heaven ascending, Thence heavenly wisdom to impart, The Holy Spirit sending; He shall in trouble comfort thee, Teach thee to know and follow me, Into all truth shall guide thee. 10 What I have done and taught, do thou To do and teach endeavor; So shall my kingdom flourish now, And God be praised forever; Take heed lest men with base alloy The heavenly treasure should destroy; This counsel I bequeath thee." Dear Christian people, now rejoice

Author: Luther Hymnal: Hymn Book #68 (1884) Lyrics: 1 Dear Christian people, now rejoice, And banish all your sadness, While with united heart and voice We sing with love and gladness, And tell how God beheld our need, And wrought that sweet and wondrous deed That hath so dearly cost Him. 2 Fast bound in Satan's chains I lay, Death brooded darkly o'er me, My sins oppressed me night and day, Therein my mother bore me, And always deeper still I fell, In all my life was nothing well, So sore had sin possessed me. 3 My good works could avail me naught, For they with sin were stained, My will against God's judgments fought, And dead to good remained: My anguish drove me to despair, Whilst death frowned on me everywhere, And hell yawned just before me. 4 But God from all eternity Looked on me in compassion; His tender mercy flowed tow'rd me, He willed my souls salvation; His father's heart yearned over me: What greater love than this could be, Which gave His richest treasure? 5 He spake to His beloved Son: "'Tis time to have compassion; Go Thou, my Son, my heart's bright Crown, And bring to man salvation: From sin and sorrow set him free, Slay bitter death for him, that he May live with Thee forever." 6 The Son delighted to obey, And, born of virgin mother, Awhile in this low world did stay, And thus became my brother; His mighty power He hidden bore, A servant's form like mine He wore, My foe for me to vanquish. 7 To me He spake: "Hold fast by me, I am thy Rock and Castle, Myself I wholly give for thee, For thee I strive and wrestle: For I am thine, and thou art mine, Henceforth my place is also thine, The foe shall never part us. 8 "I know that he will shed my blood, And of my life bereave me, But I will bear it for thy good; Be steadfast and believe me: My life from death the victory wins, My innocence doth bear thy sins, And thus thou art delivered. 9 "And when to heaven I ascend, My glory to inherit, I still will be thy Lord, and send To thee my Holy Spirit, To comfort thee in every woe, Instruct thee how me right to know, And into truth to guide thee. 10 "As I have done and taught, so thou To do and teach endeavor; Then shall my kingdom flourish now, And God be praised forever; And this last counsel give I thee: From men's additions keep thou free The treasure I have left thee."
