Psalm 119

Author: William Cowper Appears in 263 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119:105 First Line: The Spirit breathes upon the Word Lyrics: 1 The Spirit breathes upon the word, And brings the truth to sight; Precepts and promises afford A sanctifying light. 2 A glory gilds the sacred page, Majestic, like the sun; It gives a light to every age;-- It gives, but borrows none. 3 The hand, that gave it, still supplies The gracious light and heat; Its truths upon the nations rise,-- They rise, but never set. 4 Let everlasting thanks be thine, For such a bright display, As makes a world of darkness shine With beams of heavenly day. 5 My soul rejoices to pursue The steps of him I love, Till glory breaks upon my view, In brighter worlds above. Topics: Bible; The Scriptures Used With Tune: SOUTHWELL

Come Down, O Love Divine!

Author: Richard F. Littledale Meter: 6.6.11.6.6.11 Appears in 109 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119:105 First Line: Come down, O Love divine Lyrics: 1 Come down, O love divine! Seek out this soul of mine and visit it with your own ardor glowing: O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, your holy flame bestowing. 2 O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let your glorious light shine ever on my sight, and make my pathway clear, by your illuming. 3 Let holy charity my outward vesture be, and lowliness become my inner clothing; true lowliness of heart which takes the humbler part, and for its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. 4 And so the yearning strong with which the soul will long shall far surpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace till we become the place in which the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling. Blest are the undefiled in heart

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 83 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119 Lyrics: Blest are the undefiled in heart, Whose ways are right and clean; Who never from thy law depart, But fly from every sin. Blest are the men that keep thy word, And practise thy commands; With their whole heart they seek the Lord, And serve thee with their hands. Great is their peace who love thy law; How firm their souls abide! Nor can a bold temptation draw Their steady feet aside. Then shall my heart have inward joy, And keep my face from shame, When all thy statutes I obey, And honor all thy name. But haughty sinners God will hate, The proud shall die accursed; The sons of falsehood and deceit Are trodden to the dust. Vile as the dross the wicked are; And those that leave thy ways Shall see salvation from afar, But never taste thy grace. Topics: Saints happy, and sinners cursed

Psalm 119 Part 14

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 91 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119 First Line: Consider all my sorrows, Lord Lyrics: Consider all my sorrows, Lord, And thy deliv'rance send; My soul for thy salvation faints When will my troubles end? Yet I have found 'tis good for me To bear my Father's rod; Afflictions make me learn thy law, And live upon my God. This is the comfort I enjoy When new distress begins- I read thy word, I run thy way, And hate my former sins. Had not thy word been my delight When earthly joys were fled, My soul, oppressed with sorrow's weight Had sunk amongst the dead. I know thy judgments, Lord, are right, Though they may seem severe; The sharpest suff'rings I endure Flow from thy faithful care. Before I knew thy chast'ning rod My feet were apt to stray; But now I learn to keep thy word, Nor wander from thy way.
