Charles Constantine Pise

1802 - 1866 Person Name: Rev. C. Pise Hymnal Number: 105 Author of "Let the deep organ swell the lay" in The St. Gregory Hymnal and Catholic Choir Book. Singers' ed., Melody ed. Pise, Charles Constantine, was born in 1802 at Annapolis, Md., graduated at Georgetown, D.C., and was ordained in 1825. He was for some time attached to St. Patrick's Church, Washington, and while there, was, by the influence of Henry Clay, appointed chaplain to the U.S. Senate, the only time the post has ever been held by a Roman Catholic. In 1849 he became Rector of the Church of St. Charles Borromeo in Brooklyn, N.Y., and died at Brooklyn, May 26, 1866. Two hymns by him are in the Appendix to the N.Y. edition of E. Caswall's Lyra Catholica (1851, pp. 422, 427), and are repeated in Hymns for the Year 1867, viz.:— 1. First flow'ret of the desert wild. S. Rose of Lima. 2. Let the deep organ swell the lay. S. Théodore Dubois

1837 - 1924 Person Name: Th. Dubois Hymnal Number: 190a Composer of "[Adoramus te Christe, et benedicimus tibi]" in The St. Gregory Hymnal and Catholic Choir Book. Singers' ed., Melody ed. Francois Clement Theodore Dubois France 1837-1924. Born at Rosnay, Marne, France, he studied piano and was educated for a musical career at the Reims Cathedral, under Louis Fanart, and later at the Paris Conservatoire, under Ambroise Thomas. He married Jeanne-Adrienne Fortunee Augustine Duvinage. He became choirmaster at the Church of the Madeleine in 1868, and in 1871 choirmaster at the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde. He was a friend of Franz Liszt. In 1877, he returned to the Church of the Madeleine as organist. From 1871 he taught music as professor of harmony at the Paris Conservatoire. He became Director of the Conservatoire in 1896. In 1905 he was forced into retirement as a result of a public scandal (over musician rivalry concerning Maurice Ravel). He was a composer, organist, and music teacher. He wrote nine operas. His music included many religious works, two ballets, four oratorios, seven chamber music works, 14 orchestral works (including three symphonies) and three other compositions. Most of his music is no longer in use. He wrote four musical training works. He is known for his work: “The seven last words of Christ”. He received three major awards: Prix de Rome, Commander of the Legion of Honor, Officer of the French Order of Academic Palms. He died in Paris. John Perry

Henry Bittleston

1818 - 1886 Person Name: Father Bittlestone Hymnal Number: 75 Translator of "Daily daily sing to Mary" in The St. Gregory Hymnal and Catholic Choir Book. Singers' ed., Melody ed. Bittleston, Henry, M.A., was b. in London Sept. 25, 1818, and educated at St. John's College, Oxford (B.A. 1841, M.A. 1845). He was curate of Leamington Priors, Warwicks, and finally of Margaret Chapel, Marylebone, London. After being received into the Church of Rome he became a member, March 1850, of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri at Birmingham; and d. at St. Albans, July 2, 1886. His well-known translation, "Daily, daily, sing to Mary" (p. 1202, i.), is in the Birmingham Oratory Hymn Book, 1854, No. 39. with Caswall's translation as No. 40, there beginning “Holy Mary, we implore thee" (p. 1202, ii.). --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907)

1805 - 1852 Hymnal Number: 61 Author of "While ages course along" in The St. Gregory Hymnal and Catholic Choir Book. Singers' ed., Melody ed. Schlör, Aloys, D.D., was born at Vienna, June 17, 1805, and took the degree of D.D. at the University of Vienna in 1832. From May 10, 1842, to his death he was father confessor at the Theological Seminary (Spiritual des Priester-seminars) at Graz, Styria, Austria. He died at Graz, Nov. 2, 1852. Russell, Matthew, s. of Arthur Russell of Killowen, Co. Down, was b. July 13, 1834, at Newry, Co. Down, Ireland. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1857, and is now (1906) at St. Francis Xavier's Church, Dublin. He has published many small volumes containing verse, most of which, being printed in Dublin, have not reached the British Museum; and has collected the sacred verse he thinks worth preserving in Vespers and Compline, 1900, and Altar Flowers, 1900. The best known of his hymns are:— 1. A message from the Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart of Jesus. In St. Patrick's Hymn Book, Dublin, 1890. 2. O Mary, dearest Mother. May.
