In glad amazement, Lord, I stand

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 40 hymnals Lyrics: 1 In glad amazement, Lord, I stand, Amidst the bounties of thy hand. How numberless those bounties are! How rich, how various, and how fair! 2 But O! what poor returns I make! What lifeless thanks I pay thee back! Lord! I confess with humble shame, My off'rings scarce deserve the name. 3 Fain would my lab'ring heart devise To bring some nobler sacrifice. It sinks beneath the mighty load: What shall I render to my God? 4 To him I consecrate my praise, And vow the remnant of my days. Yet, what at best, I can pretend, Worthy such gifts from such a friend? 5 In deep abasement, Lord, I see My emptiness and poverty. Enrich my soul with grace divine, And make me worthier to be thine. 6 Give me at length an angel's tongue, That heav'n may echo with my song. The theme, too great for time, shall be The joy of long eternity. Topics: Of God Praise to God

God glorious and Sinners saved

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 311 hymnals First Line: Father, how wide thy glories shine! Lyrics: 1 Father, how wide thy glory shines! How high thy wonders rise! Known through the earth by thousand signs, By thousands through the skies. 2 Those mighty orbs proclaim thy power, Their motions speak thy skill, And on the wings of every hour We read thy patience still. 3 But when we view thy grand design To save rebellious worms, Our souls are fill'd with awe divine, To see what God performs. 4 When sinners break the Father's law, Thy dying Son atones; Oh the dear mysteries of his cross! The triumph of his groans! 5 Now the full glories of the Lamb Adorn the heavenly plains; Sweet cherubs learn Immanuel's name, And try their choicest strains. 6 O may I bear some humble part In that immortal song; Wonder and joy shall tune my heart, And love command my tongue. With transport, Lord! we view the page

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 8 hymnals Lyrics: 1 With transport, Lord! we view the page, Where all thy mercies shine; And joy to tell the rising age, What boundless grace is thine. 2 The world, with all its shifting schemes, Time, with its fleeting hours, Life, with its gay and flatt'ting dreams, Its hopes and fears, is ours. 3 Death, also, at our Father's word, Lays all its terrors by; Gently divides the silver cord, And calls us to the sky. 4 Fain would our hearts a tribute bring, Before our Father's throne; A tribute worthy of our King, Whose mercies are unknown. Songs of Praise

Appears in 542 hymnals First Line: Songs of praise the angels sang Lyrics: 1 Songs of praise the angels sang, Heav'n with hallelujahs rang, When Jehovah's work begun, When he spake and it was done. 2 Songs of praise awoke the morn, When the Prince of peace was born; Songs of praise arose, when he Captive led captivity. 3 Heav'n and earth must pass away; Songs of praise shall crown that day. God will make new heav'ns and earth; Songs of praise shall hail their birth. 4 And shall man alone be dumb, Till that glorious kingdom come? No:--the church delights to raise Psalms, and hymns, and songs of praise. 5 Saints below, with heart and voice, Still in songs of praise rejoice; Learning here by faith and love, Songs of praise to sing above. 6 Borne upon their latest breath, Songs of praise shall conquer death: Then, amidst eternal joy, Songs of praise their pow'rs employ. God exalted above all Praise

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 226 hymnals First Line: Eternal Pow'r! whose high abode Lyrics: 1 Eternal Pow'r! whose high abode Becomes the grandeur of a God; Infinite lengths beyond the bounds Where stars revolve their little rounds! 2 Far in the depths of space, thy throne Burns with a lustre all its own: In shining ranks beneath thy feet, Angelic pow'rs and splendors meet. 3 Lord, what shall feeble mortals do? We would adore our Maker too; With lowly minds to thee we cry, The Great, the Holy, and the High. 4 God is in heav'n, and man below; Short be our tunes, our words be few: Let sacred rev'rence check our songs, And praise sit silent on our tongues. Corrupt Nature from Adam

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 41 hymnals First Line: Bless'd with the joys of innocence Lyrics: 1 Bless'd with the joys of innocence, Adam, our father, stood, Till he debas'd his soul to sense, And ate th'unlawful food. 2 Now we are born a sensual race, To sinful joys inclin'd; Reason has lost its native place, And flesh enslaves the mind. 3 While flesh and sense and passion reigns, Sin is the sweetest good; We fancy music in our chains, And so forget the load. 4 Great God, renew our ruin'd frame, Our broken powers restore, Inspire us with a heavenly flame, And flesh shall reign no more. 5 Eternal Spirit, write thy law Upon our inward parts, And let the second Adam draw His image on our hearts. Original Sin: or the first and second Adam

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 15 hymnals First Line: Backward with humble shame we look Lyrics: 1 Backward with humble shame we look, On our original; How is our nature dash'd and broke In our first father's fall! 2 To all that's good, averse and blind, But prone to all that's ill; What dreadful darkness veils our mind! How obstinate our will! 3 How strong in our degenerate blood, The old corruption reigns, And, mingling with the crooked flood, Wanders through all our veins! 4 Wild and unwholesome as the root Will all the branches be; How can we hope for living fruit From such a deadly tree? 5 What mortal power from things unclean, Can pure productions bring? Who can command a vital stream From an infected spring? 6 Yet, mighty God, thy wondrous love Can make our nature clean, While Christ and grace prevail above The tempter, death, and sin. 7 The second Adam shall restore The ruins of the first, Hosanna to that sovereign power That new-creates our dust! The Deceitfulness of Sin

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 80 hymnals First Line: Sin hath a thousand treacherous arts Lyrics: 1 Sin hath a thousand treacherous arts To practise on the mind; With flattering looks she tempts our hearts, But leaves a sting behind. 2 With names of virtue she deceives The aged and the young; And while the heedless wretch believes, She makes his fetters strong. 3 She pleads for all the joys she brings, And gives a fair pretence; But cheats the soul of heavenly things, And chains it down to sense. 4 So on a tree divinely fair, Grew the forbidden food; Our mother took the poison there, And tainted all her blood. The World's three chief Temptations

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 56 hymnals First Line: When in the light of faith divine Lyrics: 1 When in the light of faith divine We look on things below, Honor, and gold, and sensual joy, How vain and dangerous too! 2 Honor's a puff of noisy breath; Yet men expose their blood, And venture everlasting deat To gain that airy good. 3 Whilst others starve the nobler mind, And feed on shining dust, They rob the serpent of his food T'indulge a sordid lust. 4 The pleasures that allure our sense Are dangerous snares to souls; There's but a drop of flattering sweet, And dash'd with bitter bowls. 5 God is mine all-sufficient good, My portion and my choice; In him my vast desires are fill'd, And all my powers rejoice. 6 In vain the world accosts my ear, And tempts my heart anew; I cannot buy your bliss so dear, Nor part with heaven for you. The End of the World

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 37 hymnals First Line: Why should this earth delight us so? Lyrics: 1 Why should this earth delight us so? Why should we fix our eyes On these low grounds where sorrows grow, And every pleasure dies ? 2 While time his sharpest teeth prepares, Our comforts to devour, There is a land above the stars, And joys above his power. 3 Nature shall be dissolv'd and die, The sun must end his race, The earth and sea for ever fly Before the Savior's face. 4 When will that glorious morning rise? When the last trumpet sound, And call the nations to the skies, From underneath the ground? Topics: Fall and Depravity of Man
