Sometimes a light surprises

Author: William Cowper, 1731-1800 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 407 hymnals Scripture: Lamentations 3:19-26 Lyrics: 1 Sometimes a light surprises the child of God who sings; it is the Lord who rises with healing in his wings; when comforts are declining, he grants the soul again a season of clear shining to cheer it after rain. 2 In holy contemplation, we joyfully pursue the theme of God’s salvation, and find it ever new. Set free from present sorrow, we cheerfully can say: 'Now let the unknown morrow bring with it what it may: 3 'it can bring with it nothing but God will bear us through; who gives the lilies clothing will clothe his people, too; beneath the spreading heavens no creature but is fed, and he who feeds the ravens will give his children bread.' 4 Though vine nor fig-tree neither their looked-for fruit should bear, though all the field should wither, nor flocks nor herds, be there, yet, God the same abiding, his praise shall tune my voice; for while in him confiding I cannot but rejoice. O Love of God, How Strong and True

Author: Horatius Bonar Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 110 hymnals Scripture: Lamentations 3:22-23 Lyrics: 1 O love of God, how strong and true, eternal and yet ever new, uncomprehended and unbought, beyond all knowledge and all thought. 2 O heavenly love, how precious still in days of weariness and ill, in nights of pain and helplessness, to heal, to comfort, and to bless. 3 O wide embracing, wondrous love! We read you in the sky above, we read you in the earth below, in seas that swell and streams that flow. 4 We read you in the flowers, the trees, the freshness of the fragrant breeze, the song of birds upon the wing, the joy of summer and of spring. 5 We read you best in him who came to bear for us the cross of shame, sent by the Father from on high, our life to live, our death to die. 6 We read your power to bless and save even in the darkness of the grave; still more in resurrection light we read the fullness of your might. 7 O love of God, our shield and stay through all the perils of our way; eternal love, in you we rest, forever safe, forever blest. And now, O Father, mindful of the love

Author: William Bright, 1824-1901 Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Appears in 92 hymnals Scripture: Lamentations 3:25 Lyrics: 1 And now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calv'ry's tree, and having with us him that pleads above, we here present, we here spread forth to thee that only off'ring perfect in thine eyes, the one true, pure, immortal sacrifice. 2 Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim: for lo, between our sins and their reward we set the Passion of thy Son our Lord. 3 And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing presence we appeal: O fold them closer to thy mercy's breast, O do thine utmost for their souls' true weal; from tainting mischief keep them white and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere. 4 And so we come: O draw us to thy feet, most patient Saviour, who canst love us still; and by this food, so aweful and so sweet, deliver us from ev'ry touch of ill: in thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us never more to part with thee.
