1868 - 1953 Person Name: Henry H. Tweedy, 1868- Scripture: Acts 10:34-35 Author of "Eternal God, whose power upholds" in The Hymnal Born: August 5, 1868, Binghamton, New York. Died: April 11, 1953, Brattleboro, Vermont. Buried: Mountain View Cemetery, New Fairfield, Connecticut. Tweedy attended Phillips Andover Academy, Yale University (BA & MA), Union Theological Seminary, and the University of Berlin. Ordained a Congregationalist minister in 1898, he pastored at Plymouth Church, Utica, New York (1892-1902), and South Church, Bridgeport, Connecticut (1902-09). He then became Professor of Homiletics at Yale Divinity School (1909-37). He taught liturgy, music, and the arts, and was interested in religious architecture. G. W. Briggs

1875 - 1959 Person Name: George Wallace Briggs Scripture: Acts 10:43 Author of "God Has Spoken—by His Prophets" in The Worshipbook George Wallace Briggs is a Canon of Worcester Cathedral and one of the most distinguished British hymn writers and hymnologists of today. Six of his hymns appear in the Episcopal Hymnal of 1940 (American). Another hymn on the Bible entitled "Word of the living God" was written for the 25th Anniversary of the British Bible Reading Fellowship and was sung in Westminster Abbey on June 5, 1947. It has been widely used since that time. Canon Briggs is a leading member of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He is also the composer of several hymn times, six of which have appeared in British hymnals. In addition to his work as a clergy man of the Church of England and an hymnologist, he has interest himself actively in the field of religious education, being largely responsible for two books with wide circulation in Britain, "Prayers and Hymns for used in Schools" and "The Daily Service." These books have had great influence on the worship practices of British schools, public and private. It is of historic interest that he is the author of one of the prayers used at the time of the famous meeting of Churchill and Roosevelt on H.M.S. Henry Thomas Smart

1813 - 1879 Person Name: Henry Thomas Smart, 1813-1879 Scripture: Acts 10:35 Composer of "BETHANY " in Singing the Faith Henry Smart (b. Marylebone, London, England, 1813; d. Hampstead, London, 1879), a capable composer of church music who wrote some very fine hymn tunes (REGENT SQUARE, 354, is the best-known). Smart gave up a career in the legal profession for one in music. Although largely self taught, he became proficient in organ playing and composition, and he was a music teacher and critic. Organist in a number of London churches, including St. Luke's, Old Street (1844-1864), and St. Pancras (1864-1869), Smart was famous for his extemporizations and for his accompaniment of congregational singing. He became completely blind at the age of fifty-two, but his remarkable memory enabled him to continue playing the organ. Fascinated by organs as a youth, Smart designed organs for important places such as St. Andrew Hall in Glasgow and the Town Hall in Leeds. He composed an opera, oratorios, part-songs, some instrumental music, and many hymn tunes, as well as a large number of works for organ and choir. He edited the Choralebook (1858), the English Presbyterian Psalms and Hymns for Divine Worship (1867), and the Scottish Presbyterian Hymnal (1875). H. D. Rawnsley

1851 - 1920 Person Name: Hardwicke D. Rawnsley Scripture: Acts 10:38 Author of "Father, Whose Will Is Life and Good" in The Hymnbook Rawnsley, Hardwicke Drummond, M.A., son of the Rev. R. D. B. Rawnsley, M.A., sometime Prebendary of Lincoln, was born at Shiplake-on-Thames, Sept. 28,1850, and educated at Ball. Coll., Oxford, B.A. 1875, M.A. 1883; D. 1875, P. 1877; Curate of St. Barnabas, Bristol, 1875-77; Vicar of Low Wray, Lancashire, 1878-83, and Vicar of Crosthwaite since 1883. He became Rural Dean of Keswick 1883, Hon. Canon of Carlisle 1893, and Proctor in Convocation 1905. His publications include: Notes for the Nile, 1892; Literary Associations of the English Lakes, 1894; Memoir of Harvey Goodwin, Bishop of Carlisle, 1896; Sermons on the Logia, 1897, and various books of Poems and Sonnets. The best-known of his hymns are:— 1. Hark! I hear the trumpet sounding. [Mission Hymn for Children.] In the Ch. Missionary Hymn Book, 1899. 2. Lord God, our praise we give. [In Praise of Nature]. Contributed to the 1904 ed. of Hymns Ancient & Modern. 3. Now trumpets cease your sound. [Peace.] In Hymns of the Kingdom . . . for the use of the Christian Democracy. Norwich, 1903. 4. Saviour, Who didst healing give. [St. Luke.] Written at Crosthwaite Vicarage, Dec. 1, 1905, and included in The English Hymnal 1906. 5. Lord Jesu, Who at Lazarus' tomb. [Memorial of the Dead.] Written at Crosthwaite Vicarage, Dec. 2, 1905, for The English Hymnal, 1906. 6. Lord, Who gavest streams and fountains.
