Once in Royal David's City

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7 Appears in 407 hymnals Topics: Biblical Characters David; Biblical Characters Mary Lyrics: 1 Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed. Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. 2 He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall: with the poor and meek and lowly lived on earth our Savior holy. 3 Jesus is our childhood's pattern, day by day like us he grew; he was little, weak, and helpless, tears and smiles like us he knew: and he feeleth for our sadness, and he shareth in our gladness. 4 And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love, for that Child, so dear and gentle, is our Lord in heav'n above, and he leads his children on to the place where he is gone. 5 Not in that poor lowly stable with the oxen standing by we shall see him, but in heaven, set at God's right hand on high, where, like stars, his children crowned, all in white shall wait around. Used With Tune: IRBY

While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks

Author: Nahum Tate Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,098 hymnals Topics: Biblical Characters David First Line: While shepherds watched their flocks by night Lyrics: 1 While shepherds watched their flocks by night, all seated on the ground, an angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone around. 2 "Fear not," said he (for mighty dread had seized their troubled mind); "glad tidings of great joy I bring to you and human-kind. 3 "To you in David's town this day is born of David's line a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, and this shall be the sign: 4 "The heav'nly babe you there shall find to human view displayed, all meanly wrapped in swathing bnads, and in a manger laid." 5 Thus spake the seraph, and forthwith appeared a shining throng of angels praising God, who thus addressed their joyful song: 6 "All glory be to God on high, and to the earth be peace; good will to all from highest heaven begin and never cease." What Star Is This?

Author: Charles Coffin; John Chandler Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 91 hymnals Topics: Biblical Characters Jacob First Line: What star is this, with beams so bright Lyrics: 1 What star is this, with beams so bright, more lovely than the noonday light? ’Tis sent to announce a newborn King, glad tidings of our God to bring. 2 ’Tis now fulfilled what God decreed: “From Jacob shall a star proceed”; And lo! the eastern sages stand, to read in heav'n the Lord’s command. 3 While outward signs the star displays, an inward light the Lord conveys, and urges them, with force benign, to seek the Giver of the sign. 4 O while the star of heav'nly grace invites us, Lord, to seek thy face, may we no more that grace repel, or quench that light which shines so well. 5 To God the Father, God the Son, and Holy Spirit, Thee in one, may ev'ry tongue and nation raise an endless song of thankful praise. Scripture: Numbers 24:17 Used With Tune: PUER NOBIS NASCITUR Text Sources: Quae stella sole pulchrior

Alleluia! Sing to Jesus

Author: W. Chatterton Dix Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 214 hymnals Topics: Biblical Characters Mary First Line: Alleluia! Sing to Jesus Lyrics: 1 Alleluia! Sing to Jesus; his the scepter, his the throne! Alleluia! His the triumph, his the victory alone. Hark! the songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood; Jesus out of ev'ry nation hath redeemed us by his blood. 2 Alleluia! Not as orphans are we left in sorrow now; Alleluia! He is near us, faith believes nor questions how: Though the cloud from sight received him, when the forty doays were o'er, shall our hearts forget his promise, "I am with you evermore"? 3 Alleluia! Bread of Angels, thou on earth our food, our stay. Alleluia! Here the sinful flee to thee from day to day. Intercessor, friend of sinners, earth's Redeemer, plead for me, where the songs of all the sinless sweep across the crystal sea. 4 Alleluia! King eternal, thee the Lord of lords we own. Alleluia! Born of Mary, earth thy footstool, heav'n thy throne: Thou within the veil hast entered, robed in flesh, our great High Priest-- thou on earth both priest and victim in the eucharistic feast. Scripture: Psalm 78:24 Used With Tune: HYFRYDOL

Hark, the Voice of Jesus Calling

Author: Daniel March Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 505 hymnals Topics: Biblical Characters Paul Lyrics: 1 Hark, the voice of Jesus calling, "Who will go and work today? Fields are white and harvests waiting; who will bear the sheaves away?" Loud and long the Master calleth; rich reward he offers free; who will answer gladly, saying, "Here am I; my Lord, send me"? 2 If you cannot be the watchman standing high on Zion's wall, pointing out the path to heaven; off'ring life and peace to all, if you cannot speak like angels, if you cannot preach like Paul, your can tell the love of Jesus, you can say, "He died for all." 3 Let none hear you idly saying, "There is nothing I can do," while a human soul is dying, and the Master calls for you; take the task he gives you gladly; let his work your pleasure be; answer quickly when he calleth, "Here am I; my Lord, send me." Scripture: Isaiah 6:8 Used With Tune: REX GLORIAE
