Chas. H. Gabriel

Lawrence, Jennie Ree ============= For the first seventeen years of his life Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (b. Wilton, IA, 1856; d. Los Angeles, CA, 1932) lived on an Iowa farm, where friends and neighbors often gathered to sing. Gabriel accompanied them on the family reed organ he had taught himself to play. At the age of sixteen he began teaching singing in schools (following in his father's footsteps) and soon was acclaimed as a fine teacher and composer. He moved to California in 1887 and served as Sunday school music director at the Grace Methodist Church in San Francisco. After moving to Chicago in 1892, Gabriel edited numerous collections of anthems, cantatas, and a large number of songbooks for the Homer Rodeheaver, Hope, and E. O. Excell publishing companies. He composed hundreds of tunes and texts, at times using pseudonyms such as Charlotte G. Homer. The total number of his compositions is estimated at about seven thousand. Gabriel's gospel songs became widely circulated through the Billy Sunday-Homer Rodeheaver urban crusades. Bert Polman

David Evans

1874 - 1948 Scripture: Colossians 3:1-5 Arranger of "SLANE" in Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) David Evans (b. Resolven, Glamorganshire, Wales, 1874; d. Rosllannerchrugog, Denbighshire, Wales, 1948) was an important leader in Welsh church music. Educated at Arnold College, Swansea, and at University College, Cardiff, he received a doctorate in music from Oxford University. His longest professional post was as professor of music at University College in Cardiff (1903-1939), where he organized a large music department. He was also a well-known and respected judge at Welsh hymn-singing festivals and a composer of many orchestral and choral works, anthems, service music, and hymn tunes. Bert Polman

Kate B. Wilkinson

1859 - 1928 Scripture: Colossians 3 Author of "May the Mind of Christ, My Savior" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) Little is known about Kate Barclay Wilkinson’s (b. England, 1859; d. Kensington, England, 1928) life: a member of the Church of England, she was involved in a ministry to girls in London and a participant in the Keswick Convention Movement. 1891 - 1953 Scripture: Colossians 3 Composer of "ST. LEONARDS" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) A. Cyril Barham-Gould (b. England, 1891; d. Turnbridge Wells, Kent, England, 1953) was educated at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, and ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1928. He worked in several churches in and near London and served as vicar of St. Paul's, Onslow Square, from 1936 until his death in 1953. Bert Polman

Charitie Lees Smith

1841 - 1923 Person Name: Charitie L. De Chenez (1841-1923) Scripture: Colossians 3:3 Author of "Before the throne of God above" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Bancroft, Charitie Lees, née Smith, daughter of the Rev. Sidney Smith, D.D., Rector of Drumragh, County Tyrone, Ireland; was born at Bloomfield, Merrion, in the county of Dublin, June 21,1841; and married, in 1869, to Arthur E. Bancroft. Her hymns have appeared in periodicals, Lyra Britannica, Bishop Ryle's Spiritual Songs, and other collections, and also as leaflets. The following have come into common usage:— 1. O for the [a] robes [robe] of whiteness. Heaven desired. This favorite children's hymn was 1st pub. as a leaflet in 1860. In 1867 it was included in Lyra Britannica, and thence has passed into several collections in Great Britain and America. 2. The King of glory standeth. Christ the Saviour. Contributed in 7 stanzas of 8 1ines to the Lyra Britannica, 1867, and entitled "Mighty to save." In the Hymns & Songs of Praise, N. Y., 1874, No. 1196, it begins with stanza iii., "He comes in bloodstained garments." 3. Before the throne of God above. The Advocate. Dated 1863, and given in Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book, 1806, Laudes Domini, N. Y., 1884. In 1867 Mrs. Bancroft's hymns were collected and published as Within the Veil, by C. L. Richard Proulx

1937 - 2010 Person Name: Richard Proulx, 1937-2010 Scripture: Colossians 3:1 Harmonizer of "PICARDY" in Lead Me, Guide Me (2nd ed.) Richard Proulx (b. St. Paul, MN, April 3, 1937; d. Chicago, IL, February 18, 2010). A composer, conductor, and teacher, Proulx was director of music at the Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago, Illinois (1980-1997); before that he was organist and choirmaster at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Seattle, Washington. He contributed his expertise to the Roman Catholic Worship III (1986), The Episcopal Hymnal 1982, The United Methodist Hymnal (1989), and the ecumenical A New Hymnal for Colleges and Schools (1992). He was educated at the University of Minnesota, MacPhail College of Music in Minneapolis, Minnesota, St. John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota, and the Royal School of Church Music in England. Fred Pratt Green

1903 - 2000 Scripture: Colossians 3:1-4 Author of "How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord" in Lift Up Your Hearts The name of the Rev. F. Pratt Green is one of the best-known of the contemporary school of hymnwriters in the British Isles. His name and writings appear in practically every new hymnal and "hymn supplement" wherever English is spoken and sung. And now they are appearing in American hymnals, poetry magazines, and anthologies. Mr. Green was born in Liverpool, England, in 1903. Ordained in the British Methodist ministry, he has been pastor and district superintendent in Brighton and York, and now served in Norwich. There he continued to write new hymns "that fill the gap between the hymns of the first part of this century and the 'far-out' compositions that have crowded into some churches in the last decade or more." --Seven New Hymns of Hope , 1971. G. W. Briggs

1875 - 1959 Person Name: G. W. Briggs, 1875-1959 Scripture: Colossians 3:1 Author of "Now is eternal life" in Common Praise George Wallace Briggs is a Canon of Worcester Cathedral and one of the most distinguished British hymn writers and hymnologists of today. Six of his hymns appear in the Episcopal Hymnal of 1940 (American). Another hymn on the Bible entitled "Word of the living God" was written for the 25th Anniversary of the British Bible Reading Fellowship and was sung in Westminster Abbey on June 5, 1947. It has been widely used since that time. Canon Briggs is a leading member of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He is also the composer of several hymn times, six of which have appeared in British hymnals. In addition to his work as a clergy man of the Church of England and an hymnologist, he has interest himself actively in the field of religious education, being largely responsible for two books with wide circulation in Britain, "Prayers and Hymns for used in Schools" and "The Daily Service." These books have had great influence on the worship practices of British schools, public and private. It is of historic interest that he is the author of one of the prayers used at the time of the famous meeting of Churchill and Roosevelt on H.M.S. Timothy Dudley-Smith

b. 1926 Person Name: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 Scripture: Colossians 3:2 Author of "Lord, as the day begins" in Common Praise Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Educated at Pembroke College and Ridley Hall, Cambridge, Dudley-Smith has served the Church of England since his ordination in 1950. He has occupied a number of church positions, including parish priest in the diocese of Southwark (1953-1962), archdeacon of Norwich (1973-1981), and bishop of Thetford, Norfolk, from 1981 until his retirement in 1992. He also edited a Christian magazine, Crusade, which was founded after Billy Graham's 1955 London crusade. Dudley-Smith began writing comic verse while a student at Cambridge; he did not begin to write hymns until the 1960s. Many of his several hundred hymn texts have been collected in Lift Every Heart: Collected Hymns 1961-1983 (1984), Songs of Deliverance: Thirty-six New Hymns (1988), and A Voice of Singing (1993). The writer of Christian Literature and the Church (1963), Someone Who Beckons (1978), and Praying with the English Hymn Writers (1989), Dudley-Smith has also served on various editorial committees, including the committee that published Psalm Praise (1973).
