Percy Dearmer

1867 - 1936 Scripture: Matthew 22:15-22 Author of "Father, Who on Man Dost Shower" in The Hymnal and Order of Service Dearmer, Percy, M.A., son of Thomas Dearmer, was born in London, Feb. 27, 1867, and educated at Westminster School and at Christ Church, Oxford (B.A. 1890, M.A. 1896). He was ordained D. 1891, P. 1892, and has been since 1901 Vicar of S. Mary the Virgin, Primrose Hill, London. He has been Secretary of the London Branch of the Christian Social Union since 1891, and is the author of The Parson's Handbook, 1st edition, 1899, and other works. He was one of the compilers of the English Hymnal, 1906, acting as Secretary and Editor, and contributed to it ten translations (38, 95, 150, 160, 165, 180, 215, 237, 352, 628) and portions of two others (242, 329), with the following originals:— 1. A brighter dawn is breaking. Easter. Suggested by the Aurora lucis, p. 95, but practically original. 2. Father, Who on man dost shower. Temperance. 3. God, we thank Thee, not in vain. Burial. 4. Holy God, we offer here. Holy Communion. 5. Jesu, good above all other. For Children. 6. Lord, the wind and sea obey Thee. For those at Sea. 7. The winter's sleep was long and deep. Blackheath, Kent, England, 1932) was residentiary Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral, London, and a church commissioner and member of the general synod of the Church of England. Educated at Eltham College, Bristol University, and Tyndale Hall, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1956. Saward served in several congregations and was radio and television officer for the Church Information Office (1967-1972). His publications include Leisure (1963), Couldn’t Care Less (1966), Don't Miss the Party (1974), and All Change (1983). Died: May 27, 1960, Boston, Massachusetts. Buried: Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Massachusetts Clark attended Amherst College; Union Theological Seminary, New York; and Columbia University. In 1904, he went to India as a Congregational Church missionary; in 1925, he founded the Nagpada Neighborhood House in Bombay (now Mumbai). He later served as principal of Union Training College and the United Theological College, secretary to the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (1930-47), and trustee of the International Medical Missionary Society and secretary for India, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Philippines, Spain, and Mexico. Marion Jean Chute

1901 - 1995 Scripture: Matthew 22:15-22 Adapter of "TANA MANA DHANA" in Voices Together Marion Jean Chute died at the age of 93. She was born Nov. 16, 1901 in Springfield Mass., and was raised in Holyoke, Mass. She studied American history and music at Mount Holyoke College, graduated in 1922 and became a teacher. Her first position was teaching music at a reform school for girls in Indiana. From 1924 to 1933, she served as a missionary in India. She taught music in the city of Ahmadnegar and was active in social work, language study and translation. She married Gordon Chute on Oct. 16, 1928, in Bombay, India. The couple left India in 1933 and livwd in Canada, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts until moving to Eugene in 1971. Chute sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School and served on numerous church boards and committees. A member of the First Congregational Church in Eugene she received the Ruben H. Huenemann Award for Christian Leadership from the Pacific Conference of the United Church of Christ. She continued to schedule volunteers from the church for the family soup kitchen until the time of her death. Working for international understanding, peace and social justice was a major part of her life. She helped resettle refugees after World War II, sought fair treatment of migrant workers and took international students into her home. Chute joined Clergy and Laity Concerned during the Vietnam War and served as its treasurer for nine years. She also was involved in the Interchurch Sanctuary Network, Interchurch Seminars, Church Women United and the Eugene-Springfield Homeless Action Coalition. She was a avid reader, a history buff, an outdoor enthusiast and an amateur naturalist.
