Savior of the Nations, Come

Author: Ambrose of Milan, 340-397; Martin Luther, 1483-1546; William M. Reynolds, 1812-1876 Hymnal: CWH2021 #301 (2021) Meter: 7.7.7.7 Lyrics: 1 Savior of the nations, come; virgin's Son, make here your home. Marvel now, O heav'n and earth, that the Lord chose such a birth. 2 Not by human flesh and blood, by the spirit of our God was the Word of God made flesh, woman's offspring, pure and fresh. 3 Wondrous birth! O wondrous Child of the virgin undefiled, though by all the world disowned, still to be in heav'n enthroned. 4 From the Father's throne he came and ascended to the same, captive leading death and hell. High the song of triumph swell! 5 Praise to God the Father sing, praise to God the Son, our King, praise to God the Spirit be ever and eternally. Now comes the King most glorious to reign o'er all victorious. Hosanna! Now adore him; with praises bow before him! 3 A humble beast he rides, yet as a king presides; tho' not arrayed in splendor, he makes the grave surrender. Hosanna! Now adore him; with praises bow before him! 4 The weak and timid find how meek he is and kind; to them he gives a treasure of bliss beyond all measure. Hosanna! Lift Up Your Heads, You Mighty Gates

Lyrics: 1 Lift up your heads, you mighty gates! Behold, the King of glory waits. The King of kings is drawing near; the Savior of the world is here. Life and salvation he will bring; therefore rejoice and gladly sing. To God the Father raise your joyful songs of praise. 2 The King is born in poverty, his chariot is humility, his kingly crown is holiness, his scepter, pity in distress. The end of all our woe he brings; therefore the earth is glad and sings. To Christ the Savior raise your grateful hymns of praise. 3 How blest the land, the city blest, where Christ the ruler is confessed! O peaceful hearts and happy homes to whom this king in triumph comes! The cloudless sun of joy is he who comes to set his people free. To God the Spirit raise your happy shouts of praise. 4 Fling wide the gates; prepare your heart to be a temple set apart from earthly use for heav'n's employ, adorned with prayer and love and joy. So shall your Sov'reign enter in and new and nobler life begin. To God alone be praise for word and deed and grace. 5 Redeemer, come! I open wide my heart to you; here, Lord abide! O enter with your saving grace; show me your kind and friendly face. Your Holy Spirit guide us on until our glorious goal is won. Eternal praise and fame we offer to your name. When the King Shall Come Again

Author: Christopher M. Idle, b. 1938 Hymnal: CWH2021 #307 (2021) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Lyrics: 1 When the King shall come again, all his pow'r revealing, splendor shall announce his reign, life and joy and healing, earth no longer in decay, hope no more frustrated. This is God's redemption day longingly awaited. 2 In the desert trees take root, fresh from his creation; plants and flow'rs and sweetest fruit join the celebration. Rivers spring up from the earth, barren lands adorning. Valleys, this is your new birth; mountains, greet the morning! 3 Strengthen feeble hands and knees, fainting hearts be cheerful! God, who comes for such as these, seeks and saves the fearful. Deaf ears, hear the silent tongues sing away their weeping; blind eyes, see the lifeless ones walking, running, leaping. 4 There God's highway shall be seen where no roaring lion, nothing evil or unclean Walks the road to Zion. Ransomed people, homeward bound, all your praises voicing, see your Lord with glory crowned; share in his rejoicing! Topics: Advent Scripture: Isaiah 35 Languages: English Tune Title: GAUDEAMUS PARITER

There's a Voice in the Wilderness Crying

Author: James L. Milligan, 1876-1961 Hymnal: CWH2021 #308 (2021) Meter: Irregular Lyrics: 1 There’s a voice in the wilderness crying, a call from the ways untrod: Prepare in the desert a highway, a highway for our God! The valleys shall be exalted, the lofty hills brought low; make straight all the crooked places where the Lord, our God, may go! 2 O Christians, you bring good tidings; get up to the heights and sing! Proclaim to a desolate people the coming of their King. Like the flow'rs of the field they perish; like grass our works decay. The pow'r and pomp of nations shall pass like a dream away. 3 But the Word of our God is eternal; the arm of our God is strong. He stands in the midst of the nations, and he shall right the wrong. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd, the lambs shall gently hold, to pastures of peace shall lead them, and bring them to his fold. Topics: Advent Scripture: Isaiah 40:3-11 Languages: English Tune Title: ASCENSION

The Advent of Our King

Author: Charles Coffin, 1676-1749; John Chandler, 1806-1876 Hymnal: CWH2021 #309 (2021) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Lyrics: 1 The advent of our King our prayers must now employ, and we must hymns of welcome sing in strains of holy joy. 2 The everlasting Son, in flesh content to be, himself a servant's form puts on to set his servants free. 3 O Zion's daughter, rise to meet your lowly King, nor let a faithless heart despise the peace he comes to bring. 4 As judge, on clouds of light, he soon will come again and his true members all unite with him in heav'n to reign. 5 Before the dawning day let sin's dark deeds be gone, the old self all be put away, the new self now put on. 6 All glory to the Son, who comes to set us free, with Father, Spirit, ever one, through all eternity. Topics: Advent Scripture: Zechariah 9:9-10 Languages: English Tune Title: ST. THOMAS

Arise, O Christian People

Author: Valentin Thilo, 1607-1662; Arthur T. Russell, 1806-1874; Unknown Hymnal: CWH2021 #310 (2021) Meter: 7.6.7.6.6.7.7.6 First Line: Arise, O Christian people! Lyrics: 1 Arise, O Christian people! Prepare yourselves today; prepare to greet the Savior, who takes your sins away. To us by grace alone the truth and light were given; the promised Lord from heaven to all the world is shown. 2 Prepare the way before him; prepare for him the best; cast out what would offend him, this great, this heav'nly guest. Make straight, make plain the way: the lowly valleys raising, the heights of pride abasing, his path all even lay. 3 The humble heart and lowly God raises up on high; beneath his feet in terror the haughty soul shall lie. The heart sincere and right, that heeds God's invitation and makes true preparation — it is the Lord's delight. 4 Prepare my heart, Lord Jesus; turn not from me aside, and help me to receive you this blessed Advent-tide. From stall and manger low come now to dwell within me; I'll sing your praises gladly And forth your glory show. Topics: Advent Scripture: Luke 3:4-5 Languages: English Tune Title: AUS MEINES HERZENS GRUNDE
