Psalm 48 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 301 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 48:1-8 First Line: Great is the Lord our God Lyrics: [Great is the Lord our God, And let his praise be great; He makes his churches his abode, His most delightful seat. These temples of his grace, How beautiful they stand! The honors of our native place, And bulwarks of our land.] In Zion God is known, A refuge in distress; How bright has his salvation shone Through all her palaces! When kings against her joined, And saw the Lord was there, In wild confusion of the mind They fled with hasty fear. When navies tall and proud Attempt to spoil our peace, He sends his tempests roaring loud, And sinks them in the seas. Oft have our fathers told, Our eyes have often seen, How well our God secures the fold Where his own sheep have been. In every new distress We'll to his house repair; We'll think upon his wondrous grace, And seek deliv'rance there. Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through. Let strangers walk around The city where we dwell, Compass and view thine holy ground, And mark the building well; The orders of thy house, The worship of thy court, The cheerful songs, the solemn vows, And make a fair report. Glorious Things of You Are Spoken

Author: John Newton, 1725-1807 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,287 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 48 Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of you are spoken, Zion, city of our God; He whose word cannot be broken Formed you for His own abode. On the Rock of Ages founded, What can shake your sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, You may smile at all your foes. 2 See, the streams of living waters, Springing from eternal love, Well supply your sons and daughters And all fear of want remove. Who can faint while such a river Ever will their thirst assuage? Grace, which like the Lord, the giver, Never fails from age to age. 3 Round each habitation hov'ring, See the cloud and fire appear For a glory and a cov'ring, Showing that the Lord is near. Thus deriving from their banner Light by night and shade by day, Safe they feed upon the manna Which God gives them on their way. 4 Savior, since of Zion's city I through grace a member am, Let the world deride or pity, I will glory in Your name. Fading are the world's vain pleasures, All their boasted pomp and show; Solid joys and lasting treasures None but Zion's children know. Topics: Beginning of Service Used With Tune: AUSTRIA
