Willmarth, James W., was born in Paris, where his father laboured as a Baptist minister, Dec. 23, 1835. He entered the American Baptist ministry in 1860. His hymn "O Father, Lord of earth and heaven" (Holy Baptism ) was written in 1867, in 6 stanzas of 4 lines. It was used at a public baptism at Wakefield, Massachusetts, June 30, 1867. In 1871 it was given, abbreviated to 4 stanzas, in the Baptist Praise Book. It was also rewritten in 5 stanzas, and included in the Baptist , 1871.
