Marian was the daughter of Stephen Longfellow (1805-1850), and niece of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and hymnist Samuel Longfellow. She spent her girlhood (and did her first writing) in Brookline, Massachusetts. In 1876, she married William Francis Morris of Boston. She is remembered as a poet, lecturer, and translator.
