Bucknall was a pu­pil of Will­iam Monk, and be­came his as­sist­ant in 1868. He served as or­gan­ist of South­well Min­ster (1872) and All Saints, Clif­ton (1876). He re­ceived his MusB de­gree from Ox­ford in 1878.
