Gilbert Beebe was born in Norwich, Connecticut on November 25, 1800. He belonged to the Baptist Church in Norwich, and was baptized at age 11. He moved to New York in 1816, joined the Ebenezer Baptist Church, and was licensed to preach in 1818. He served as an itinerant preacher for about five years. In 1823 he was married and then served the Baptist Church of Ramapo in Rockland County, NY. In 1826 he accepted a call to the Baptist Church in New Vernon, NY, where he remained connected for fifty years, but also served churches in Alexandria and Upper Broad Run, Virginia, the Shiloh Church in Washington D.C. and Middletown and Wallkill Church in New York. He was publisher of The Signs of the Times and published The Baptist Hymnal, an hymnal used by the Primitive Baptists. He died in Middletown New York May 2, 1881.
