The Christian Hymnary

You are here

The Christian Hymnary (CHB41972) is badly outdated.

On here it says it has 888 songs. The copy I have, from the 22 printing (2001), has 1000 songs, plus 4 after the index, and 1 facing song #1. What would it take to get it updated? Also, how can I help, with this first, but also on hymnary.org as a whole? I am only a few minutes signed up. Thanks, Arlen

The Hymnary information is valid -- for the older printing. But it would be great to create an entry for the new printing. Are you a spreadsheet user? If so, it might be easiest to download the earlier version, tweak the spreadsheet to match the new edition, and upload that as a new hymnal.

Or are you more of an XML person? There's also an XML schema that can be imported.

Finally, there's an online data entry system. I'd hate to see you start from scratch: maybe TPTB could copy the earlier version to a new hymnal record, and let you tweak it up to date.

Also, many of the DNAH hymnals are missing a handful of the hymns that did actually appear in the hymnal. I don't know if that is the case with this one.

Stephen is right about the ways of helping, and if the 22nd printing is different enough from the one we have to warrant adding another edition, it would certainly make sense to start from the older edition. The easiest way of doing that is to export the older edition as a spreadsheet, edit it, and re-import it as a new hymnal.

However, you have to have editor permissions to be able to do these things, and we have a 22-question quiz and a training hymnal with 5 hymns to help you get up to speed. For more information see the wiki, especially the training page: http://www.hymnary.org/wiki/Training_Material_for_Editors
