Findings on G.E. Wright

You are here

The person mentioned in this forum topic is listed as the author of "When the Savior Reached Down for Me" (https://hymnary.org/text/once_my_soul_was_astray_from_the_heavenl), along with some twenty other texts on this site.

I plan on including this song in one of my future hymnals, I was curious to find out who this G.E. Wright was exactly, and I believe I have discovered who he was.

I knew the song had been copyrighted by Stamps-Baxter at some point in its history, so I tried searching copyright records to see if there was any additional information on the composer, with little-to-no avail, other than confirming it was a property of Stamps-Baxter {Can be seen on the first entry within the middle column of the right page) (https://archive.org/details/catalogofcopyrig3214libr/page/112/mode/2up)

Next, I searched to see if there were any additional pieces of information linking G.E. Wright with Stamps-Baxter, and a list of hymnals came up where a person with the same name played some part in the creation of one published by the Gospel Trumpet Co. out of Anderson, IN. (https://finding-aids.lib.unc.edu/20429/)

Given the publisher was out of Indiana, and the composer supposedly out of Texas, I thought, seems odd, however, I continued in my quest.

Then, I looked to see what his affiliation was with the Gospel Trumpet, and found a publication of theirs where it mentions a G.E. Wright out of Groesbeck, TX. {See p. 254} (https://books.google.com/books/about/The_Gospel_Trumpet.html?id=RFBFAQAAMAAJ)

After that, I looked to see what people with that name lived in that area, and came across an obituary of a man by the name of Joy Glen Wright, Sr., who mentions G.E. Wright, a brother of J.B.F. Wright, author of Precious Memories {https://hymnary.org/text/precious_memories_unseen_angel},was his Grandfather. (https://www.groesbeckfuneralhome.com/obituary/joy-wright)

[Important Note: In John Brasselton Fillmore's list of siblings on Findagrave, one of them is listed as George Edward Wright {1875-1962} (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/42737121/john-braselton_fillmore-wright)]

Making sure that the genealogies were consistent, I checked Joy Glen's father's {Leonard Earl (1899-1987)} Father on Findagrave and FamilySearch, only to find out there was not one listed.

I thought for a moment something wasn't adding up since I had not found any additional confirmation of G.E. being Leonard Earl's son, but, after a quick search on Ancestry, it confirms that his father was, indeed, George Edward.

Given these sets of evidence, I am confident that the G.E. Wright, who was the author of "When the Savior Reached down for Me", along with some twenty other texts, was George Edward Wright, who lived from 1875-1962, and is buried in Groesbeck, TX. (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/54613057/george-edward-wright)

If there seems to be anything illogical, I will look back at whatever faults there might be, but otherwise, I hope you all find my discovery to be valuable to the site, and for hymnology in general.
