Searching for hymns by hymnalTitle AND fullText

You are here

Hi,

I've been trying to search for hymns by their full text - and are in the hymnal my church owns (Revival Hymns and Choruses).
I am able to search the hymns in this hymnal (using hymnalNumber:"RHC") by every other field (textName, etc), but when I add the "fullText" parameter, it always returns 0 results. An example:

I've tried adding this hymnal into 'My Hymnals' and then doing a fullText search, but it always returns 0 results.
Has anyone had any luck (or rather, been blessed) with a way of searching a specific hymnal by the full text of its hymns?

Thanks in advance.

I suspect the reason you can't search this way is that none of the instances in RHC have full texts in the database.

If you are trying to find the full text of a particular hymn, you can use RHC to find the first line, and then click on it and go to the text authority page, where you will generally find a full text. But it may not be the same as the full text in RHC. You'd have to check it against the appropriate page in the hymnal itself.

If you became an editor, you could add the RHC full texts so you and everyone else could search them. But so far, no one has entered them.

Thanks, Haruo. I thought that because the first lines and titles of the hymns in RHC had been indexed, surely a full text search against the hymns in the entire database could be narrowed down to those also in the RHC - but it appears not to be the case.

Thanks for clarifying, though I'm not sure whether I'm up to the task of manually entering the full texts of each hymn in the RHC. I doubt that this would require adding the RHC full texts; linking the full texts of existing hymns in the database to the hymns stated to be in the RHC should suffice (though some wording may differ, possibly defeating the purpose).

Some wording is almost certain to differ, which does indeed defeat the purpose. If you go to the text authority for some well-known hymn (pretty much any one that isn't recent enough to be under copyright) and click on Compare full texts or All full texts or whatever it will quickly become apparent that most hymns exist in quite a variety of forms. Three stanzas or seven stanzas? "Rapture" or "Transport"? Etc. etc. etc.

It is possible to search for full text for the RHC if you have RHC in My Hymnals, if you enter a line in the Full Text search box, and if you have no other limitations, such as the "My Hymnals" check-box being checked. The results will put an icon next to the hymns that appear in your hymnal. You can also click on the first line of the hymn in the hymnal which will take you to the hymn summary. You should find a full text there but it may not be the same wording as what is in RHC.

I guess the unchecking of the "My Hymnals" check-box is the part I didn't think of. Hopefully that will solve Henrii's problem.

Incidentally, Henrii or anyone, is RHC available anywhere for purchase (or download)? It isn't listed on Amazon at least in the US. I'd be interested in seeing a copy.

NOT ALL THE HYMNS IN THE PRESBYTERIAN HYMNAL GIVE YOU THE SCORE WITH THE FULL TEXT. WHY NOT?

We do not have permission to display the full texts and the scores if they are copyrighted.
