Texts vs. Total Texts vs. Unique Texts vs. Overlapping Texts PLEASE HELP!

You are here

My church is considering replacing its current hymnal, "Christian Worship: A Hymnal," with "Celebrating Grace: Hymnal for Baptist Worship." I added both to "My Hymnals" here and then clicked on them to generate a comparison.

Christian Worship Celebrating Grace
Total Texts: 558 Total Texts: 707
Unique Texts: 415 Unique Texts: 564

I understood the comparison until I tried to explain it to someone. I'm assuming this means that of the 198,969 texts here at the web site, 558 are in "Christian Worship" and 707 are in "Celebrating Grace." That's where it becomes too confusing. What does "unique" mean? That 415 texts are in "Christian Worship," but not in "Celebrating Grace"? That 564 are in "Celebrating Grace," but not in "Christian Worship"? That the two hymnals have 143 texts in common?

This morning I shared pdfs of the two comparisons (one with "Christian Worship" on the left and the other with "Celebrating Grace" on the left. I highlighted the hymns we routinely use that would be lost if the church adopts "Celebrating Grace."

Then, I was asked why I did not highlight all 415 "unique texts." My intent was simply to highlight the 20 or so hymns that were not in "Celebrating Grace."

Does the comparison really mean that 415 texts are in "Christian Worship," but not "Celebrating Grace" and 564 texts are in "Celebrating Grace" but not "Christian Worship"? Some please, please help ASAP! I'd love to have this clarified before Sunday morning's worship service. Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Yes, there are apparently 415 hymns in CW1941 that are not in CGH2010. Yours is a very unusual church if you actually use all 415 of them. I would be interested to know what "20 or so" hymns you highlighted. I supplied most of the data on CW1941, which is the hymnal I was raised on in the 1950s and 1960s at Seattle's University Baptist Church. I didn't know there were any churches that were still using it!

I would strongly urge you to make the switch and also to compile a local hymnal supplement that would include any of the hymns from CW1941 that you actually use that are not in CGH2010, as well as any other hymns that your members have always wished were in the hymnal.
