AMSTERDAM (Nares)

Why is this tune named "AMSTERDAM (Nares)" when the attribution to Nares appears to be late and not very well documented? Why not go with the earliest source for the 7.6.7.6... version of the tune if one doesn't want to conflate it with the 9.9... version and call it "AMSTERDAM (Halle)"? There are multiple tunes called AMSTERDAM, but this one is far and away the most common.

Comments

None of our instances, so far, credit Hille as a composer. The odds are that any new instances of this tune will credit Nares and we want editors and users to be able to find the tune.

Halle, not Hille; in any case, what is the basis for the attribution to Nares? I don't see the matter addressed in the Tune Authority.

Name given by John Wesley in 1742 remembering his visit to that city in 1738.
