A Mighty Fortress

You are here

I was just looking at the authority page for "A Mighty Fortress" and noticed some oddities.

1. The default full text was "God is our stronghold firm and sure." When I ran a search for this text, I got two choices; one pointed back to "A mighty fortress" and the other pointed to an authority for "God is our stronghold." I fixed this, easy enough, and filled in a few details in the authority for "God is . . ."

2. Seems to me that there should be a way to point people to these various translations and refer them all back to "Ein feste burg." So, for example, on the page for "Ein feste burg," we could create links within the Julian article to the various translations that are available on Hymnary; or perhaps at the top of the authority page create a short list of common translations with links to each respective authority. Likewise, for the translation authorities, at the top of the page there should be a link that says "Translation of Ein Feste Burg" with a link back to the German.

If we can create a standard approach to cross-linking foreign texts with their translations (is there one?), then I can help fix these when I see them.

For now, we are putting the original language first line in the original language title field of the authority. Then a search for "Ein Feste Burg" should find all the translations as well as the original.

How did

O God, Our Help in Ages Past
Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus
Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound)
Fight the good fight
O for a Closer Walk with God

qualify as "Related Hymns" with reference to "A Mighty Fortress"? Why not

Ho! my comrades, see the signal
Away to the Rock that is higher than I
Thee will I love, O Lord, my strength
You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord
Soldiers of Christ, arise

or any number of other choices?

They are related because these hymns appear frequently near a particular hymn in a number of hymnals, so there is an assumption that the Related Texts are similar in topic, since hymnals generally group hymns of similar topic together.
