This arrangement was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 for a program of Lenten readings and music. While honoring the jaunty nature of the shaker melody set on the tune SIMPLE GIFTS, the arrangement carries a darker undertone when recounting the crucifixion and death of Jesus, thus making it suitable for use in Lent as well as other times of the year.
