Trinity Hymnal 1961

You are here

Hello,

It looks like you have the 1990 Trinity Hymnal but not the 1961 version put out by the OPC. All of the information is already available at opc.org, so I would think it would be pretty easy to add. Any plans to do so? I would be interested in seeing the differences.

Yes, we have it, and it is here, but the records need to be updated to reflect the correct page numbering, and other details need to be added. Does jfhutson have editorial status?

No, I do not, but I would be happy to contribute. I started to get the material online into spreadsheets, and I should be able to send it tomorrow to the address mentioned in the instruction page. Is it OK to use this material without verifying it against the actual hymnal? Can I assume this is all public domain? The website seems to imply it is by saying they're not releasing the 1990 version because many of the hymns are under copyright.

Also, should it have shown up when I did a search? It did not. The only way I can get to it is with the link you provided. On a related note, I get two Scottish Psalters when I search using the term "scottish," but none when I search for "psalter." Do you know why that might be?

Thanks!

It does not look like the OPC site has all the hymnal information, like there is no source, author, or composer information. You could certainly send us the information that is there to get the hymnal started.

Since this hymnal was published before 1979, to find it you should put a check in the Pre-1979 box. I think the reason you find 2 hymnals for "Scottish" and none for "Psalter is because there are hymnals with "psalter" in the title that were published after 1979, so you get the results for these, but there are not hymnals published post-1979 with "scottish" in the title, so the program checks the pre-1979 box for you and shows you the pre-1979 results.

OK, thanks. I sent the spreadsheets to ccel@calvin.edu.

OK, I see how the search function works now. Thanks for the information. It might be nice to include the "pre-1979" box underneath the search box at the top of the page. It's not obvious that the selections in the search box on the left are associated with the search box a the top. Really I think the top search box should function as a "search everything" like it says.

One other user-friendliness idea might be to make it easier for new users to find media related to hymn instances. When I first started using the site I thought when I went to a hymn page from my hymnal and saw no media that I was just out of luck, but when I learned that there's media connected to the texts and tunes from other hymnals, I was able to find a score and a midi file for almost any hymn I wanted once I clicked over to the text and/or tune. Maybe on each hymn instance page you could include under the tune and text information any media associated with those tunes and texts, or at least a note saying that media may be at the text/tune pages.

Thanks again!

Thank you to whoever implemented my suggestion regarding media!
