128. Once I Wandered Sad and Lone

1 Once I wandered sad and lone,
On the mountain bare and cold;
Through the night, so bleak and drear,
Seeking after earthly gold.
Faintly then I heard the call,
On the nigh-wind’s bosom wild,
“Come to me, I’ll give you rest;
Stay no longer, come, my child.”

2 Then I answered, Lord, I come,
Guide me from this desert lone
Safely to thy bleeding side,
For my strength is almost gone.
Then once more I heard his voice
Float upon the winds so chill,
Calling, calling once again,
Louder, sweeter, clearer still.

3 On I pressed through flood and storm,
Faced the tempter’s fiery blast,
Till I felt my Savior’s hand
On my throbbing brow at last:
Like a fainting, bleeding lamb,
Then I fell at Jesus’ feet,
Weary, then I sank to rest
In his presence calm and sweet.
