168. The Rock Once Cleft for Me

1 There's a rock of refuge for the weary,
A blessed safe retreat,
Where the soul upon life's fitful journey,
May find a rest complete;
When the storms of life are fiercely raging,
For refuge safe I fell,
And I hide me there until the skies are fair,
In the rock once cleft for me.

Chorus:
Blessed rock I'm safely hid away in Thee,
All secure from storms that sweep life's surging sea,
Some bright day Upon a happy golden shore
I shall praise Thy love,
With shining hosts above,
Evermore, forevermore!

2 When the hosts of darkness would assail me,
My soul to lead astray
From the path of righteous and glory,
From heaven's shining way;
When in chains of darkness they would bind me
For refuge safe I flee,
Finding sweet repose secure from all my foes,
In the rock once cleft for me. [Chorus]

3 When the shades of death are hov'ring o'er me,
The way grows dark and chill,
When my work of love on earth is ended,
My songs are hushed and still;
I will fear no harm while crossing over
The dark tempestuous sea,
I am kept secure with all the good and pure,
In the rock once cleft for me. [Chorus]
